Is there a basic "How to" on using flight plans in X-Plane 10?

I'm able, sometimes, to "File flight plan", point "A" to point "B" airports, using the ATC window...not always! Sometimes it refuses to accept it. Not sure why but I have an idea so, I'll get there.

 

But, I now have "Plan G" that will generate VFR flight plans as well as IFR. I can export them to X-Plan format but:

 

1. Where do I put them so that I can use them?

2. How do I get the flight plans loaded?

3. Can those flight plans be "Filed" with ATC?

 

I have searched the X-Plane manual and found little to nothing regarding flight planning and using flight plans...just the simple ATC window that won't accept a waypoint that does not correspond to a navaid.

Flight plans in the .fms format are stored in the folder "Output > FMS Plans".

 

You can load such flight plans directly in the GNS 430 (use the FPL button to open the flight plan page group, then turn the outer knob to select the page with existing flight plans. Press the knob to get the cursor in the list and turn the inner knob to select the file. Press ENT to confirm your selection.)

 

You can also load them into the default FMS, which is still part of some aircraft (and the FF A350...)

 

IIRC, for filing flight plans with ATC you need to enter the waypoints in the ATC window manually.

Yeah, I've got the FMS figured out now... And Yes, I know you need to enter the flight plan manually in the ATC window.

 

What I still do not know is how to translate a user fix (not a navaid) into something the ATC will accept. So, when I want to fly to the peak of Granite Mountain and hang a right, ATC will know about it.
