Braking

Featured Replies

All,Since I have been using Fly!II, I've noticed that the brakes have minimal effect. I mainly fly the 757, so I assumed that it was because I was stopping 80 tons, but in recent flights with the ROTW Warrior, I find that I can't do a pre-flight run up because the parking brakes don't have the "grab" required to keep the plane stationary at 2,000 RPMs. (Seems to work fine with the C172.) Now, I'm told by another pilot at AWVA that his (manual) brakes work very well on the 757, which leads me to wonder if there's a setting somewhere that I should check to "stiffen" the brakes.Anybody know of anything?

Kurt,Are you able to hold your position on the runway at High Thrust settings with the 757? When I take the runway I usually allow the power to stabilize above 1.3 EPR before brake release and I am able to hold my position easily. I do find the brakes on the 757 take a long time to slow it down but after Taxiing the real thing I can assure you that the braking action is realistic. It does take a long time to slow down a big piece of Iron like this with a Heavy Load of Fuel and Pax. May also want to see if the "brake" message is flashing on the screen while you hold the brake key or joystick button. I did once have a problem with a button not holding the brakes while I was holding the button down. It would cycle on and off endlessly. Unfortunately I can't remember how I resolved it.RegardsPaul

Paul,Thanks for your insight. I did, indeed, expect that the heavy iron would take a long while to slow down, but under manual braking, I find even 10,000 feet of runway to be far too little. Autobrakes work very well, though, except (as noted in another post) that they don't continue to function while the thrust reversers are deployed.I have often kept the parking brake set at the end of the runway and let the engines stabilize at 1.1+ EPR before starting my takeoff roll. The parking brake doesn't seem to be an issue in the 757.On the other hand, I do see the "brakes" message flickering when I hold the B key down for manual braking. It sounds like I'm having the same indications you had, so it's a pity you can'tremember what you did to fix it.

Kurt,It seems to me that you have a very old problem with Fly!If I understand correctly the plane keeps moving even if you havethe brakes apply, it is that the case ?Is the motion sideways or straigthforward ?If that try changin the realism setting for the ground tractionif not it means that it is posible that you do not have the757AT.txt inside the PMDG folder. If you also have the 777 or previous airplanes from P.M.D.G. you will notice that when youtaxi it is very unrealistic the power setting because it will speed up very rapidly, I use to keep the brakes applied very slightly to control the taxing speed without the need to keepmoving the throtle back and forward. But since the 757 thiscleaver guys has manage to fix this so you can taxi with a realisticspeed, this have been a problem since the beganins of TRI.One other thing is Fly is very delicate with the installation process, do you have a stable installation ?Mine 757 works perfect with the brakes.I hope this can help you.Rene P Cardona

Rene,Thank you. Yes, the plane does not slow effectively under manual braking. It's not only the 757, but all the planes. The motion is forward...again, the 757 does well at higher-than-idle thrust settings when the parking brake is engaged. (The ROTW Warrior is a different story.)Ground traction is checked in the realism settings, and after you suggested it, I checked that the 757AT.txt file was in the PMDG folder. (I hadn't thought of that.)The installation was very stable, as were all the patches. Undoubtedly, there's a setting somewhere that needs to be adjusted, and I just need to figure out what it is.

Kurt,It seems to me that you do not have assign the brakes to anyaxis of your joyistick is that correct?I have the multiple joys so I can set them and therfore I canchange the amount of braking when I use them manually.Rene P Cardona

Kurt,Double check your Reality settings to see if the Ground Traction is selected on. Other than that I would check your Key Assignments and see if you can find a button on your Joystick that you can assign the Ground Brake function to and see if that helps. I do notice that the Brake message does flicker once on my current set-up but then stays on steady if I keep holding the Brake button. Just out of curiosity, what kind of weight are you Landing at and what are your Fuel Levels?RegardsPaul:-cool

Paul,You and Rene both suggest using the joystick for braking...sounds like a quorum to me. I'll give that a try. Thanks again for all the help...both of you.

Rene,Thanks to both you and Paul for the fix...it does indeed work better with a joystick button.

Paul,It certainly is! Had a nice flight from KBWI to KPHX this morning. Less-than-forecast headwinds allowed me to more than make up for a late departure, and I had ATC (with VATSIM) from departure all the way through Chicago Center. Nice weather in Phoenix earlier this afternoon, so I took the visual approach into RWY 08, and though I landed long, the braking action was good, and I made the turnoff I planned on, right at the company concourse. This is fun!
