August 3, 200223 yr Always confuses me - When a wind is said to be 090 degrees at 10 mph, does it mean that it is blowing feom West to East or East to West?In short, when wind is reported, is it meant to be the direction it is headed or the direction it came from? Thanks for answering this really easy question.Sincerely,Chris the Novice
August 3, 200223 yr When wind is reported, it is meant to be the direction it came from... So if the winds are 090 at 10, then you would want to be landing pointed to the east (so your plane is moving west to east into the wind and the wind is moving east to west).Jason

Chris,... the direction it is coming from ... FWIW: I've seen professional software developers implementing wind correction algorithms for targeting applications make the error of thinking winds reported as 090@15 are blowing east when in fact they are blowing *from* the east. You are not alone ... we all get confused at one time or another. ;-)-michael
August 4, 200223 yr Commercial Member Chris the Novice :-lolWhen I first started flying, I leared the following trick:When trying to determine the direction of the wind, picture a compass. Place your finger on the point of the compass that is reported in the ATIS. The wind is blowing from that point toward the center of the compass...For example, if the winds are 090@10 knots- then you would place your finger on the 3 O'clock position of the compass. The wind is blowing from that point toward the center of the compass- so....east to west!Try it a few times- and you'll find that you intuit the process pretty quickly!Robert S.
