Autobrakes #2

Featured Replies

This is what the 73NG Manual has to say about Autobrakes.Autobrake SystemThe autobrake system uses hydraulic system B pressure to provide maximumdeceleration for rejected takeoff and automatic braking at pre-selecteddeceleration rates immediately after touchdown. The system operates only whenthe normal brake system is functioning. Anti-skid system protection is providedduring autobrake operation.Rejected Takeoff (RTO)The RTO mode can be selected only when on the ground. Upon selection, theAUTO BRAKE DISARM light illuminates for one to two seconds and thenextinguishes, indicating that an automatic self-test has been successfullyaccomplished. To arm the RTO mode prior to takeoff the following conditions must exist:

"- if you LAND with the selector still in RTO it won't function, the DISARM light will go on after 2 minutes, not seconds as previously mentioned"Hi, Lee... According to Smartcockpit.com, the NG does illuminate the light in 2 seconds, the Classic doesn't (and is 2 minutes as per your manuals)."The manual is for the 3/4/5, but I don't think much has been changed for the NG."Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are even notable variations between, say, one -800 and another -800 (even in the one airline). Unfortunately, I don't have access to any manuals for the -600's and -700's, only the Classics and the -800's, and I am starting to take this into consideration before commenting :-) (If I remember, I will now preface all my questions/comments with something like... "I don't know how the -600/-700's chosen by PMDG would behave in this situation, but some of our/someone else's dash 800's do it this way....")Comments on FMC's, in particular, can be pointless if you don't know what manufacturer's FMC is fitted to PMDG's aircraft or what hardward/software options have been chosen. Honeywell and Smiths have different operating logic.Of course, there are some things which must obey the laws of physics... and FAA regs... no matter which/who's airplane it is :-) If an RMI has a VOR/ADF selector knob on it, the pointer's shouldn't point to GPS satellites ;-) Cheers.Ian.

Hi Ian,Oops! I'll have my lawyer look into a standard phrase to include, to limit my liability in these matters :-)Just out of curiosity's sake, would you know if the 2 second self test annunciation of the DISARM light when you first set it to RTO is still there in the NG?And finally, I once discussed the Classic and the NG's differences with an Easyjet pilot, who said they use the same SOP and their pilots actually do fly both types. Also, I have a Flight Crew Training Manual for the 300 to 800 and there are very few differences mentioned. Would I be right in assuming that operationally important things haven't changed all that much? For instance, things like the fact that the autobrakes on RTO will only start to operate when you're over 90 kts? I can hardly imagine that things like that have changed much. Leo Bakker

"Just out of curiosity's sake, would you know if the 2 second self test annunciation of the DISARM light when you first set it to RTO is still there in the NG?"I'll have to get back to you on this one, Leo (don't have any Autobrake notes with me at the moment). BTW, have you checked out the Landing Gear pdf at Smartcockpit.com... Some differences have been listed there."Would I be right in assuming that operationally important things haven't changed all that much? For instance, things like the fact that the autobrakes on RTO will only start to operate when you're over 90 kts?"This remains the same, but other things can be quite different.... but what may be operationally significant to some, may not be operationally significant to others ;-)Airplanes coming out of the factory now are significantly different from the old generation aircraft (at least under the skin). How much of these differences will be seen in day to day flying is a good question (although, judging by all the adverse comments on airplane handling on sites like PPRuNe, some do think it is quite different :-)).Anyway, I'll get back to you on Self Test indications.Cheers.Ian.

"Just out of curiosity's sake, would you know if the 2 second self test annunciation of the DISARM light when you first set it to RTO is still there in the NG?"Hi, Leo...According to a 600/700/800/900 Boeing Maintenance Manual (I was looking at last night), no, the 2 second self test annunciation of the disarm light is not there. However, according to that particular manual, there is one for 1.4 seconds! :-lolHonest! (Be sure to check it, next time, with the new PMDG Chrono ;-))."For instance, things like the fact that the autobrakes on RTO will only start to operate when you're over 90 kts? I can hardly imagine that things like that have changed much. "You are correct. The 737NG Boeing Manual states that "All wheel speed average must be more than 88kts" I assume that the manual means main gear wheels (I can't say I've seen a wheel speed sensor on a nose wheel before).Hope this helps.Cheers.Ian.

Hi Ian,Well, as far as timing the self test goes: we now know that there will be a timer, however I'm not sure the self test will make it into the patch. (It's not in the sim now, so that's why I was curious if the real NG still had this feature.)And yes, it DOES help. As always. Thanks!Leo Bakker
