landing the 737NG manually - difficult to steer?

Featured Replies

Hi!Yesterday I've lost one aircraft of my 737NG-fleet during an approach to LHBP :-( During the approach, I saw that the localizer - signal was not lined up with the runway, so I chose to do a manual landing.I tried to correct the heading, but the aircraft seemed to slip away.Yaw dampers where on - could that be the problem?I have the CH pedals, so I don't work with auto-rudder of course :-lol What are your opinions about steering the 737 manually? To me it seems that rudder inputs are being ignored :-hmmm ...regards,Joerg

Joerg, hi.I had the best manual landings ever with this bird and that is without pedals, just the Microsoft Precision Joystick. I indeed turned the yaw damper on so may be that is the problem. Once the plane is configured I switch to the landing view and I really enjoy handflying it down.Pls note that I am not a real pilot so I am only telling you that I really LIKED what i did. Others can comment on the behaviour of the real thing vs pmdg within fs limits etc...RegardsThanos

Hi!All aircraft of this size are a bit sluggish when in landing configuration due to the drag created by the flaps and also the ailerons and spoilerons are forming a smaller part of the overall wing size due to the flaps being extended but you should have no problem with rudder response.Remember that the track of the aircraft will not change as quickly as the heading, so you can either hold on the rudder a little longer or apply a little more power to get the aircraft flying in the same direction that it's pointing.Hope this helps!

How did you disengage the A/P?If I use the button I've programmed to my joystick, the disconnect horn sounds, but I don't have any rudder authority unless I click the Disconnect button on the MCP.The Yaw Damper is always on, but isn't it more for higher speed stability?I agree with Thanos that this NG is sweet to hand-fly.

Hi!Tried it again yesterday, this time it worked fine...However, it seemed that the yaw dampers where disengaged somewhere during the flight - is this possible? (I'm not 100% sure if I engaged the yaw dampers before takeoff...).Another thing I noticed is that the autopilot *seems* to disengage sometimes during approach when pressing "APP". The VOR/LOC button and the APP button become dark, but the autopilot continues on the localizer-path ...This happened several times now, but, as I said, it's not an issue that big because the autopilot continues to work, just the lights go off (and can't be turned on again...).regards,Joerg

Hi Joerg>Another thing I noticed is that the autopilot *seems* to>disengage sometimes during approach when pressing "APP". The>VOR/LOC button and the APP button become dark, but the>autopilot continues on the localizer-path ...If the buttons are lit up or not is really not that important if you want to check the A/P mode. It's more important to check the mode annunciator display, which is the uppermost part of the PFD. http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/25096.jpgThere you see which A/P modes are active and which are armed (more about it in the manual!!). When you press the APP or LOC button it means you arm that mode. Should read LOC and G/S in white on your PFD. After it is engaged the respective button light extinguish and the annunciation for that particular mode turns green on the PFD.Hope it helps,EDIT: Clarity
