a bit of light relief whilst we wait

They didnt want to patch as much as people dont want to wait for one.As a bit of light relief whilst we wait though, with regard to embarassment and discomfort from software developers I can share a couple of quick stories. The first one goes to prove that no matter what you intend as a product it doesnt always work out the way you hoped! At the time I was the top selling entertainment software author in Holland because of my games being imported there. I was invited on a press and signing tour of the country to promote my new game "Magnetron" (actually about robots and a sequel to my team-mate Andrew Braybrook's game Paradroid). I was all excited at seeing the Netherlands in more depth. The idea was that I would visit various towns and cities, smile at people in stores and sign copies followed with various interviews and culminating in a live TV interview on the Friday.I arrived in Amsterdam and within 15 minutes of arriving at the first store I found that there was a huge mistake in the software, a bug? well kind of.. the name. As Dutch readers on this forum will tell you "Magnetron" means microwave oven there!! All of a sudden based on the questions I was getting in the stores about reheated chicken I was suddenly aware that the game had been misnamed badly. I had no idea of the name meaning that! Not only that, this was day one, and I had Utrecht, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Roermond, Eindhoven and other places to visit! and that live TV interview. I had a week of solid embarassment followed by a live TV interview in Hilversum where I was asked if I had got the idea of the game from TV dinners :)) Just goes to show best plans in software dont always work out.For discomfort and on the subject of dinner, I was invited by my fanclub in Iceland to visit Iceland and the local TV and radio decided they too would have a word with me. The idea was to go on a live chatshow sit on the sofa with presenter and guests and eat a meal whilst discussing yourself. Sort of a chat show, cookery, house guest, afternoon TV sort of show. You know the things. All seemed fine and I got sat on the sofa on live TV with a presenter and an Icelandic singer called Bjork, and then the food came out!. Just try explaining software development on live TV and smile whilst eating Roast Guillemott (a somewhat dark oily seabird) and for a main meal of Whale Blubber! :)) You can just imagine the rest cant you with me soldering bravely on..So whilst we all wait for this patch, things dont always go according to plan in this crazy industry of ours, although Im sure the team can wait until after the patching process if anyone wants to offer them a whale blubber lunch whilst they work :)take careAndrew Whittaker

all I can say is, more than I did :)

Ahh, Iceland! I guess each country has its culinary delights, lol. You should be glad you weren

Hi Tord, I have actually tried that on a trip to a games company in Umea. I wont say anything to offend, other than it was "unusual" ;-)Every country has its own peculiarities I guess. A couple of years ago I had some of the Microsoft games group over to stay for the weekend at my place in the UK In between discussing FSim and Age of Mythology I had to give lessons in English tea making :)Andrew
