Question about FMS with NG

Recommended Posts

Hello, I would like to inquire if the NG FMS supports flight plan programming independent of the FS9 flight planner (can I enter a random plan via the keypad)? Are victor and jet route airways programmable in the NG FMS?Can I reprogram the FMS in flight with new waypoints and a change in destination?Does the NG FMS support Direct TO waypoint functions? Can Lat/Long coordinates (user defined waypoints) be added to any flightplan?Does the NG FMS display flap setting and V-speeds?____________Thanks!

"Yes to all your questions..."In 999/1000 cases, that is.... I still haven't figured out why mine's not allowing me to enter anything on the LEGS page after booting up the sim in flight, Randy ;-)BTW, on a similar subject, is the fact that I can't enter an airport ICAO as a waypoint on the LEGS page (at any time) a result of a faulty (non-PMDG) database or is PMDG not programmed to read ICAO's in databases? I was able to enter an airport code on a Classic FMC the other day, so I'm assuming it should be possible on an NG (I know... never AssUMe :-)).Also, on a Smiths FMC, is it possible to enter waypoints on the LEGS page without first selecting Departure/Arrival Airports on the ROUTE page? (I've been off work for several weeks and can't check for myself).Thanks!Cheers.Ian.

Ian,From what I read in the manuals, I guess not.Proper sequence is inputing dep and arr airports, and from then on you can enter wpts on the rte/legs page. But then the manuals state that you cannot change the departure in flight... chicken and egg thing...I have not programmed the FMC to accept airport ids as wpts. This can be changed if needed (but is it needed... ?).anthonyAnthony MertonPrecision Manuals Developmenthttp://www.precisionmanuals.com

Hey Anthony, better question is, IF you can do that on the real FMC, why not here hehe =)[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. "I have not programmed the FMC to accept airport ids as wpts. This can be changed if needed (but is it needed... ?)."I'll let you know, Anthony. I know QF have Company Routes on their 767/747-400 fleet which include airport ICAO entries at the start/end of their routes (as seen on the LEGS and ROUTE pages, but I haven't yet confirmed if our 737's have this.E.g.SYDPER008.......YSSYDIR.....WOLH68......CBJ142....BORQ172..TUNAAQ76.....ESPJ68......PHDIR....YPPHI was trying to find one of our routes with the waypoint "PRAWN" in it, for extra effect, but no such luck :-)Having the ICAO code, I've read, can improve fuel predictions when there are, say, no VOR's located close to the airport. If it is too hard to program, don't bother... The Honeywell FMC, at least, removes these entries automagically when you enter DEP/ARR's. This could complicate the logic too much(?).Thanks.Cheers.Ian.

Hi Anthony,Just came back from burning some kerosene so I will try to be awake while asnwering."But then the manuals state that you cannot change the departure in flight..." - I find this interesting since the FMC I am familiar with on 737NG allows entry for origin on RTE page for ANY phase of flight. Directly from the AOM: "Entry is allowed for all phases of flight. Entry of a new origin erases the previous route."BUT, and I repeat BUT, entry for the company route (i.e. CO ROUTE) is inhibited inflight.Regarding the use of Airport in the TO on the RTE page. It IS possible to use it. Of course it is for DIRECT route segment where valid inputs are: any valid waypoint, fix, navaid, AIRPORT and RUNWAY.So in short:* On RTE page ORIGIN *can* be altered in ANY phase of flight* On RTE page CO ROUTE entry is INHIBITED inflight* ON RTE page in the TO field airports CAN be entered (will show DIRECT in VIA field) and runways can also be intered in the TO field. If this was too fuzzy blame it on my daily doses of kerosene! :-badteethOff to rest and prepare body for the new jet fuel ammount.

Anthony, U10.3 and later 737NG-OPSMNL page 1207, bottom of page, He is correct, but left out an important fact, it's an OPTION, not standard...[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Hi Randy,You are correct! :)As I said I was sniffing to much of that jet fuel so I *forgot* to mention that :-badteethBut do not forget about the possibility to enter airports and runway in RTE page (TO field)Some low flying (and speeding) clouds here north - the joys of flight in north europe, never know if there is RASH or CAVOK within 15min :)

Hello Aleksandar! You mention the RTE page for ICAO entries but what about en-route on the LEGS page for modifcations? Thanks! [h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Hi, Anthony.Yep, WOL is Wollongong (easy part). :-)Re the entry of ICAO codes... and the necessity to do so (this may take a bit longer as photos are required).I entered an official QF Co Route on the Route page of a Classic 737 with a U10.5 ops program and I got the following:http://members.ozemail.com.au/~b744er/737/CoRoute.jpgSo yes, it would be a "nice to have" ;-) The ICAO also appeared on the Legs page as expected. When I was first using the FMC, I noticed that, although I hadn't entered any details on the Route page, there were already two Route Pages. The Route pages looked like this...http://members.ozemail.com.au/~b744er/737/RoutePage1of2.jpg...and....http://members.ozemail.com.au/~b744er/737/RoutePage2of2.jpgI recall that the latter page would not accept any entries however (but I will double check this)The Legs page looked like this....http://members.ozemail.com.au/~b744er/737/LegsPage.jpgSo clearly this would not accept any entries either (at this point)...as there are no spaces provided.Just one more thing.... I confirmed what your pilot friends said about being able to reset the FMC Master Annunciator using the CLR key after its illumination by the appearance of one of the following scratchpad messages (according to the NG manuals):FMC Alert Msg ListCYCLE IRS OFF-NAVDATA BASE INVALIDDISCO INSRTD AFTR XXXXXDISCONTINUITYEND OF OFFSETEND OF ROUTEENTER IRS POSITIONINSUFFICIENT FUELIRS MOTIONIRS NAV ONLYLNAV BANK ANGLE LIMITEDMAX ALT FL XXXMISSED CAPTUREMODEL ENGINE DATA INVALIDNAV DATA OUT OF DATENAV INVALID-TUNE XXXXXOVERSPEED DISCONNECTPERF DEFAULTS INVALIDRTA UNACHIEVABLESCANNING DME FAILSELECT MODE AFTER RTASINGLE FMC OPERATIONTAKEOFF SPEEDS DELETEDUNABLE HOLD AIRSPACEUNABLE NEXT ALTUNABLE REQD NAV PERF-RNPVERIFY GW AND FUELVERIFY POSITIONVERIFY RNPVERIFY TAKEOFF SPEEDSVNAV DISCONNECTThis totally contradicts the 737NG Boeing Wiring Diagrams and Schematics, however! The experts are looking into it at the moment. Hopefully Boeing will rectify their drawings as a result of conversations over a U$40 something flightsim :-lolI don't know if this helps (as the FMC belonged to a Classic and has a different Ops program to PMDG's).Cheers.Ian.

I cant seem to input Victor or Jet Airways in at all. The above mentioned post says its posoible. Searched but to no avail.Chris de Barros/MYNNBahamasair DHC8-300

Hello Chris, From the RTE page, did you hit NEXT PAGE on the CDU? This is a FMC update so you have to go to the next page and you will see the VIA and TO lines. You will be able to enter airways ;)[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Guys,Interesting to see ORIGIN dashed instead of boxed! Does this mean that ORIGIN is not a mandatory input for a valid flight plan?Regards,
