Back course issues with ADI and ND

Featured Replies

Folks,A while back I made a post about not being able to use the autopilot to lock on to a LOC/BC approach. Several people clued me in that the way to fly this approach would be to:Fly it by hand, or;Use the FMC to create an overlay while monitoring raw data.So today I decided to try it again.I successfully hand flew the KPTK ILS 9R approach, went missed and attempted to hand fly the 27L BC approach. Here's a screenshot of the ADI and NDhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/37550.jpgThe problems here are:1. That the raw data on the ADI is backward - it's supposed to adjust automatically (Bulfer cockpit companion, page 127).2. Nav Display and ADI do not track the back course - they will swap between full left and full right deflection as you cross the course, but do not scroll smoothly from side to side - I think this is due to whatever logic is used to make the CDI bar / ADI dot turn solid. When attempted, the FMC overlay worked well in LNAV, but it was impossible to monitor the raw data, making it a "worrying" experience in IMC.Thanks for your attention!

Hmm...I am surprised the beta testers didn't report anything about this. I'll investigate further and correct, if there's an issue.

Lets hope one of your Beta testers tried a Left holding pattern ;)Am I the only lefty here? :-lolRay

>Lets hope one of your Beta testers tried a Left holding>pattern ;)>>Am I the only lefty here? :-lol>>RayI've programmed left holds, and as I recall they were executed correctly. The normal ND vector drawing issue still applied of course.

Ray, There has been some MAJOR changes from the version you are running. The one item that I was concerned with is BEST SPEED being the active speed while intering a hold. The NG should place the best speed automaticly into the hold target and command this speed. I will check the L hold pattern...[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Must have been an earlier patch level ... exit was on the wrong side of the pattern.Ray

Hi all, Now that you are talking about the issue, I have a question: When programming a hold, is that particular hold or the depiction of it on the ND made with reference to the best speed? I am having problems with the aircraft not following the hold as depicted on the ND no matte what speed I set on the MCP (that is, if I leave it at the speed computed by the FMC for LNAV and VNAV or if I manually enter the speed computed by the FMC in the HOLD page). In either case, the aircraft banks to the maximum (I have left the bank limit at the default 30 degrees). The aircraft starts the turn at the right point but never manages to make it sharp enough to keep the track depicted on the ND. The result is that it flies parallel to the track on the ND and starts the last turn (the turn towards the holding fix) much later than depicted. Thanks,Boaz

Pretty safe bet this is all fixed in the SU2 patch which will be flying soon once they make sure that they are not breaking something else with the fix ;)Ray
