Standby Altimeter/Airspeed Indicator Problems

Featured Replies

As I make my way around the globe*, I think my airplane is slowly disintegrating around me...I couldn't quite read the baro readout on the Standby Altimeter in cruise, so I thought I'd dial in a new baro setting to see if that would help. It didn't... the Altitude and Airspeed both dropped to zero and stayed there. I tried to return the baro setting to where it was, but with no success.Hopefully someone can reproduce this?Thanks.Cheers.Ian.P.S. *Started in Seattle, heading Southeast.... currently flying between Singapore and Bali.P.P.S. I recall someone posting a message on the forum about reaching a cruising altitude (in PMDG's NG) higher than that of Concorde's. A few days ago, I experienced something similar when running PMDG in the background.... I returned to the sim from my Desktop to find that day had turned to night and that my altitude readout was around 80,000'... and, of course, my aircraft was falling (because of the thin atmosphere).... and it continued to fall until the altimeter showed zero, yet I was nowhere near the ground... Negative altitude values showed as I continued to fall... then the altimeter showed over 90,000'... and I still continued to fall... repeating the process. I lost count of how many times it did this, but I think I must have been at either at 280,000' or 380,000'!!! The night returned to day as I re-entered earth's atmosphere (honest!).... and I finally levelled out at normal altitudes... or at least my VSI showed I had levelled out and the ground looked a lot closer. My altimeter, however, still continued to dive. Thankfully everything returned to normal when I rebooted the sim. Can't remember having this much fun with PIC or PS1 :-lol

Hi,Heat protective tiles and coverings are included in the SU2 upgrade Ian. Would have been great to see some screenies of that orbit attempt. ;-)"Space and Beyond",

Ian,As the tears of laughter stream down my face having read your account I can only say I'm glad you survided the experience! :-)

"Heat protective tiles and coverings are included in the SU2 upgrade Ian."LOL.... I think I heard a TCAS fly down command in the background... Perhaps it was the Space Shuttle I was about to hit :-)Not your average flight!Cheers.Ian.

Re my Standby Altimeter problem....I just remembered that I was flying over the equator around about the time I got the zero altitude/zero airspeed readings. Has anyone flown over the equator yet in PMDG?Haven't had the chance to fly today. Does pushing the STD button on the EFIS lock up the Standby Altimeter at 2992?Thanks.Cheers.Ian.

I did some more tests, Randy, and I can reproduce it at will. Firstly, I didn't realize that the baro on the Stby Altimeter is linked to the Baro on the EFIS Control Panel. i.e. change one and it changes the other. However, if you try to change the baro on the Stby Altimeter with the EFIS in STD, the altitude/airspeed on the Standby Altimeter drops to zero. I have seen it reset after fiddling with the baro setting and waiting a while. My Equator-crossing was co-incidence ;-)Perhaps in the -800/-900 series we could see independent baro controls? (I have seen the two instruments at different settings on real aircraft... For what reason tho', I don't know). It may be an impossible task, however.... Not even PIC has independent baro control.Cheers.Ian.

"f you try to change the baro on the Stby Altimeter with the EFIS in STD, the altitude/airspeed on the Standby Altimeter drops to zero." Ian, I do not have any problem setting the Baro to STD and changing the STDBY ALT, speed is unaffected. Could be the newer version I have though....[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J.
