How to do a "manual" takeoff followed by VNAV?

Hi all.Sorry if this is old news. I

What airport are you flying out off? I've never tried flying a SID (or STAR) manually myself in the PMDG737 and I'd like to try and duplicate your flight. John Fitzpatrick

Hi John,I flew out of ESPA which is in the northern part of Sweden. I think the SID is fairly easy and comfortable to fly manually. With manually I mean that I

I think it is because you set your altitude below cruise alt.The VNAV cannot climb furture

I think it might be something to do with the use of VOR LOC. Try the same using only HDG SEL. My suspicion is that the FMS logic is (incorrectly) using the engagement of VOR LOC to decide it is on final approach (i.e. the LOC part of VOR LOC) and therefore thinking the climb and descent have been completed.James

Hi there, this is a known issue. If you engage VOR/LOC even to track a VOR radial, the FMC logic will think you want to perform an ILS, thus it enters approach mode. That is why VNAV doesn't engage anymore and all you can access in the FMC is the DES page.Anthony is aware of this and I believe it's fixed in SU2. Unless it ain't broke. :-)So your best bet is to use HDG mode to track the radial or LNAV.Hope this helps.Best regards,Bjorn

Yes, I tried it, no luck. However, I'm a little confused about the SID. I was using FSNav and noticed that SLU 115.10 is almost right on the airport. Taking off from 32 makes for one hell of turn at 1000' using VOR LOC. One thing was , I was able to access the CLB, CRZ pages, but everytime I hit VNAV I got a FMC message "check MCP Altitude". I even tried different altitudes thinking 1000' was too low with no luck. Somewhat baffled. John

Yes John, the SID will basically call for a 180 degree left turn. Odd about the fact that you could access the CLB and CRZ pages. I got the same FMC msg as you. However, with the info from Bjorn we should be able to simply use HDG SEL and "cheat" the VOR intercept with that.

I am not sure about the VOR LOC stuff or about it locking you out of FMS pages. But, it won't ascend using V-nav unless the MCP altitude is as high or higher than the altitude that the VNAV wants. I always takeoff using HDG select adn LVL CHG until cleared for the route as filed. At that point, say I was at 6000 and am cleared to FL370. I must put 37000 in the MCP and then hit VNAV and it will work. That is what the message "check the MCP alt" means. Hope this helps.
