Help With A Couple Of Issues

Featured Replies

Man I'm lovin' this plane! Whew! However, there are two issues I'm having, and need some help. If these have already been chronicled here on this Forum, then forgive me for repetition. I will scan some more for instances.Well..here goes!1. When I'm issued a heading by ATC and I dial it in, airplane overshoots or undershoots and stays there...2. A loud, wind-howling thunderous roar everytime I switch to external (Tower) view...Any help or direction will be appreciated for the above. Otherwise, great airplane, and superb work PMDG!Thanks!

I am not clear on your question 1, maybe post a screenie for us. If you are running FS9 with a SoundBlasterLive! card, you will need to download the latest patch which by the way does fix with issue (I had the exact issue months ago).Cheers,[h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. Issue number 1 I don't think it's an issue...it depends on winds. Try it with clear weather and no winds and you'll see it hold the HDG precisely. During wind conditions if you're asked to fly a track then you need to compensate for the wind.Regarding issue number 2 it might also be Active Camera....if you're using it in FS2002 I think there's an option to turn the exterior sound off in the active camera menu.Regards,Bjorn

Okay! Thanks Bjorn and Randy for your replies. Now I think Bjorn's suggestions more closely resemble what I have going on. I do indeed have Active Camera in use when I'm flying the bird, but I never associated it with any sound components whatsoever...so I'll be checking that out... Randy, I have a Creative sound card, but it's an Audigy not a "live", so it's probably the Active Camera phenomenon I'm dealing with. I will let you guys know. The heading story: Alright, let me try to explain this one...ATC gives me a heading to fly, say 160 degrees. I dial this in on the HSI. The airplane begins to turn, and then...whoops...it passes thru 160 to 165 and stays there. In other words, my airplane is pointing at 165 degrees while the purple heading indicator that you see on the display points to 160 degrees. Now all my other heavies in FS, when I point them to a heading they stay on it, even in wind conditions.I may get blown off by the wind, in which case ATC vectors me back on course, but the airplane in this case would stil be pointing at 160 degrees. So that's my problem with this birdie, why does she overshoot (or undershoot) the heading I set? Is this normal, or am I flying this aircraft wrong? Why don't my other airplanes exhibit this same behavior in similar (windy) conditions? Sorry to be so long-winded (no pun) and I hope I haven't confused you guys more!I will try Bjorn's no wind experiment and keep you guys posted, but as I stated, I don't have to do wind corrections with other heavy aircraft in windy conditions. Thanks guys, and look forward to any other insights and more discussion!

Well, Bjorn's right. If ATC gives you a "track" you must follow the track that they give you, corrected for wind. For example, they say "fly the ____ ground track" you've got to follow that specific ground track irregardless of heading.BUT, that's not what it sounds like here. MSFS ATC doesn't issue "tracks" (at least not that I've heard) only headings. Therefore, when ATC gives you a heading, they expect you to fly that heading, and realise what the wind will do to you. If ATC tells you to fly "Heading 160", you fly heading 160, regardless of what your track is. If you dial in 160, and the plane flies 165, it's not doing what it's supposed to do and then you've got a problem. A lot of planes in MSFS I've seen do that, just a touch. You dial in 160 and they fly 162. Don't know why they do though. Flying a no-wind situation shouldn't matter, unless the aircraft logic is programmed wrong. Joe G.

Where are you reading your heading from? If you are reading it from the map mode of the navigation display, the large white numbers at the top are the airplane's track. (Notice the green TRK and MAG indications. They are telling you that the map is in Track mode displaying the magnetic track that you are flying.)If there is any crosswind, the heading and track will be different. The heading will be indicated by the white inverted triangle with the sharp end pointing at the heading angle on the map mode's compass. The heading bug that indicates the heading set in the Mode Control Panel is a magenta M-shaped icon. The white heading pointer (inverted triangle) sits neatly inside the magenta heading bug when you are flying in on autopilot in the heading select mode and the airplane has stabilized on heading.Hope this helps.Don S.

Awright then gents...an update!First, Randy, I updated the sound drivers as you suggested and though that didn't solve the "thundering noise" problem, it nevertheless is something I should have done a long time ago.The noise in fact was the result of not turning the "sound on" feature in Active Camera off, as Bjorn had suggested. The heading problem was not really a problem after all, but the result of this idiot flying the airplane with the EFIS map display in TRK/MAG mode rather than HDG/MAG mode. I was alerted to this by Don's post. And you're right Randy, you would have no doubt caught this right away with a screenie. So! Needless to say I'm happily plying the blue, gray, and all manner of sky colors again! And I have only you gentlemen to thank for your valuable insite and suggestions.Happy flying all!
