January 17, 200422 yr Wondered for some time how most pilots operate the Nav Rad while flying in the " real " worldI mean do they tune them manually..since there is no auto tune or do they just leave them off?If so what are the exceptions? Thanks Peter Osborn
January 18, 200422 yr There's no real need to tune the radios (VOR/ADF receivers) along the way, only during the departure and arrival as backups. For the rest of the flight, the FMC will autotune other stations (preferably DME-DME) to augment and cross-check its position. The manually tuned stations still remain active as well. With the 2 GPSes, the system is very very accurate and the tuning of those station is really not required during normal cruise. To be honest, I can't recall a single story of anyone having to resort to raw data navigation during flight in a modern airliner.
January 19, 200422 yr "While at cruise, both Nav Radios should beoperated in the AUTO position to allow FMC radio updating." This quote is from a real world NG manual. Isn't this raw data?
