No luck with autoland (737 NG)

Featured Replies

Hi,I am not having much luck (or skills :-)) using autoland with the 737NG. Before I am able to hit 'CMD B' the APP LEDs go out. This is without using the FMC so there is no VRef etc. set. When the APP LEDs go out, the yellow 'Single CH' in the PFD stays on.Hope someone has an idea on what I am doing wrong here.Cheers,Siggy

Hi there...I am not sure if Vref speeds are necessary, but you need to manually dial in the freq for BOTH nav1 and nav2!If this is not achieved there will be only a single channel land function...PIC dials in the freq's automaticall, but this one you need to do your self! Not sure if that is because it's not a 67, but a 37NG...Have you done this? Also always fly the a/c so that you can lock on the LOC and THEN press the APP button to intercept the G/S...Hope this helps because the plane will flare like a pro all by itself!Boaz...

Thanks Boaz..., had both NAVs tuned to the same frequency. It looked as if the APP LEDs went off once the plane was onthe rails down to the threshold :-). And yes, I first had theVOR LOC button on, once that had captured the APP and thatwas still below GS so it could intercept GS.I guess there are more conditions that must be met ?Regards,Siggy

The real 767 won't autotune the ILS reciever. It's just 767PIC that does this as FS200x doesn't model an ILS reciever, and so ILS's and VOR's are recieved using the same equipment (in 767PIC), which is not realistic.Regards,Mark

That's correct, the 757/767 have three separate ILS receivers and one separate ILS tuning panel that sets them both. On the 737NG, you have 2 VHF NAV receivers that you must both tune to the ILS freq and set both CRS selectors to the inbound course. There's no need to arm LOC first and press APP once on the LOC, the GS won't be captured before LOC capture anyway. The only time you may want to do this is if you plan on descending below the GS first while on the LOC, or not being cleared to descend on the GS by ATC.Anyway, once the GS and LOC have both been captured, the APP button lights will go out. You can (should be able to) select the second autopilot CMD button before 800 ft radio altitude.Set your VREF speed correctly for a flaps 40 landing (that's VREF40 + 5 knots, always), the autopilots need that figure.Enjoy.

Ok guys that answers MY question but NOT siggies...Boaz...

Siggy, I don't have the answer to your question, as I'm mostly doing manual approaches or with FMC, but, there is one fast way to see what you're doing wrong. Download 737NGADVTutorialV2.zip from avsim.com library. Fly the first day. No FMC and ILS autoland I think...

I'v noticed on some runways that were not designated as Cat-II or Cat-III auotoland didn't work, thats the way it is in the real world. I'm not sure how closely NavData or PMDG models this. I have Not had enough time to look into this more closely.Just some food for thought?Regards

I don't think that something like that is modelled...It must be something simple with his issue. I just did a simple CAT3 landing into LOWL, which I doubt that it's certified CAT3 landing, but nevertheless, but I didn't do it with PMDG though (PSS).

Thanks to all who replied. What happened was that I was trying Timothy's 2nd day tutorial and the autoland (CMD A+:( did not work for me. Then, to save time, I tried just to fly out of Rwy 1R at SFO for 18NM at 2900ft then turn back to (Auto-) land on 19L. Even when I went lower like e.g. to 1500ft, so I am guaranteed below GS, I could not get it to work. Will keep trying and if there is any outcome will let you know what I did wrong :-).Regards,Siggy

Tune Nav1 and Nav2 on the ILS Frq. Also try these rwy extenstion Alt's as they put you right on the Glide Slop. Remember these Alt's are in AGL ( Above Ground Level ) example. If you set your rwy extenstion to 10mi and your airport elevation is 1350ft then your 10mi rwy extenstion is 3000ft + ( Airport Elv of 1350ft ) = 4350ft6000ft AGL 22nm rwy ex5000ft AGL 18nm rwy ex4000ft AGL 14nm rwy ex3000ft AGL 10nm rwy ex2000ft AGL 7nm rwy ex1000ft AGL 3nm rwy ex

Hi everyone,Success ! What I did different was not to press VOR LOC first but press APP shortly after turning back to SFO 19L at a distance of about 18NM at 2900ft. Once the ILS bar became solid magenta I pressed the CMD B. Both CMD LEDs then stayed on until a fabulous touchdown. The APP LEDs turned off at around 10NM. I need to study this a bit more. Love to fly in through terrible weather with a nice cup of coffee and watching :-).Thanks again for everyone who replied.Regards,Siggy

Hey Siggy, nice that it worked out! I like even better having a cup of tea/coffee and holding joystick in the other hand, making corrections as the hard crosswind in terrible weather is trying to put me out of my misery! :-lol
