FMC - vectors, STARS and ILS for RWY

Featured Replies

HiI am starting to get the hang of the FMC. That is, I can plan a route, correctly allocate a STAR and ILS Rwy etc. However, I have noticed that the resulting route often includes the instruction 'vectors' representing a gap between one point in the route and the point at which the ILS rwy vor loc can be captured. Is it usual to have 'vectors' included in teh flight plan - or is this evidence of my choosing the wrong STAR / RWY combination? If this is usual, then is there a way to have to FMC automatically identify the ILS Rwy sequence - or is the APP phase always manually established by the pilot?Any advice on ths will be appreciated.ThanksSimon

It's because the procedure contains vectors for that segment. In other words ATC would vector but unless you are on-line it's not ging to happen. In this case (since default ATC is not going to know your route) simply DIR TO to next waypoint and hit EXECU and presto still in LNAV...Best Wishes,[h4]Randy J. RandyThanks for the advice. If I am online and ATC provides vectors, will LNAV automatically resume when within range of ILS for selected RWY - or should NAV radios, course heading etc always be set manually?RegardsSimon

>Randy>>Thanks for the advice. If I am online and ATC provides>vectors, will LNAV automatically resume when within range of>ILS for selected RWY - or should NAV radios, course heading>etc always be set manually?Assuming you ARE getting vectors, then one of two things will happen:If you're getting vectored on a departure or enroute, ATC will eventually tell you to fly to a fix, i.e. "Fly heading 240 direct AML when able". In that case you'd just put AML in line 1 of the LEGS page 1 (direct to AML), and resume LNAV.If you're being vectored to an approach, ATC will eventually put you on a heading that will intercept the final approach course, and clear you for the approach, i.e. "Fly heading 180, maintain 3000 until established on the localizer, cleared for the ILS 15R approach". In this case you'd have the ILS frequency and course set up the radios and MCP, and once you get the clearance for the approach you'd arm the VOR/LOC mode which would automatically intercept the localizer. If doing a non-precision approach (VOR,GPS, NDB,etc), you'd have to get one of the waypoints on the approach into line one of the LEGS page 1 (direct-to), and then resume LNAV as appropriate.

TimothyThanks ... it is as I had supposed, a vectored approach requires manual setup of radios and MCP.RegardsSimon
