Rudder Trim and Autopilot

Recommended Posts

Hey all,Im just looking at the rudder trim knob and display on the radio stack. My problem is I cannot get the autopilot or flight director to use the rudder trim in abnormal weather conditions like strong crosswinds. There never appears to be any rudder trim activity. Is the rudder trim use by the autopilot implemented in the 737 series? Many thanks in advance.Armen at EGLLwww.veryquiet.com

Hey Armen,The reason you can't get the autopilot to use the rudder trim is quite simple - it can't.I don't think there are any aircraft out there that use autopilot controlled rudder trim. Also rudder trim shouldn't be used as a primary flight control. In strong crosswinds the autopilot will apply a wind correction angle to compensate for the wind and stay on the desired track i.e. It'll crab into the wind. Hope it helps :)David
