Looonnggg MD-11 flight: KIAH-->FNLU

Recommended Posts

I saw this World Airways MD-11 flight http://flightaware.com/live/flight/WOA1000 on FlightAware, and I'd like to know what you all think about this distance for an MD-11.KIAH --> FNLU Distance reported as 6850nm. Flight plan: BPT5 BTR J590 MGM J40 MCN CH AR4 OLDEY L435 JAINS L435 MEGGG 2800N 06000W 2700N 05000W 2500N 04000W ULTEM UR976 CVS UA602 TITOR UG853 TERBA UG853F OPAPODo you think they will do this non-stop? If so, will they have to cut down the cargo? Is the MD-11 one of those aircraft that can trade cargo for fuel?RhettFS box: E8500 (@ 3.80 ghz), AC Freezer 7 Pro, ASUS P5E3 Premium, BFG 8800GTX 756 (nVidia 169 WHQL), 4gb DDR3 1600 Patriot Cas7 7-7-7-20 (2T), PC Power 750, WD 150gb 10000rpm Raptor, Seagate 500gb, Silverstone TJ09 case, Vista Ultimate 64ASX Client: AMD 3700+ (@ 2.6 ghz), 7800GT

Yes. I did it 2 weeks ago in the sim. We model the updated MD11 ER model with PIP (Performance Improvement Package). Was looking for some MD11 real long range route in flightaware.com In fact I did it 2 times. Once left it overnight at 1x sim-rate to check overall package stability etc over 12+ hours and once at 4x from ToC to ToD (including step climbs) to see how it would fare, since a lot of simmers conduct long range flights this way.I entered almost all wind aloft data supplied by ASX (healthy +32 average) and used the FMS INIT page 2 in combination with the "live" load manager as my means of trading payload with fuel, by a bit of trial and error.I am happy to report that the sim passed the test with flying colours (Delta new colours if I remember correctly !).Pity I took no pics.Best,Vangelis===================================== E M V Precision Manuals Development Group www.precisionmanuals.com=====================================

Flight time is 13:44A very rough calculation on fuel for a loaded 11,14 hrs @ 7500/hr gives trip: 105.000 kg. TankCapacity: 114.000Also tailwinds are to be expected on this route and she is making use of it already.>If so, will they have to cut down the cargo?Need some more detailed figures for that, Max T/O ,LDG weights etc.It also depends on the Cargo volume/weight range.>Is the MD-11 one of those aircraft that can trade cargo for fuel?Sure she can. But being very popular as a cargo plane nowadays I think this trade-off is only needed for really long flights.You spotted a nice MD-11 long range flight Rhett, and in not too much time, we will be able to do it ourself, virtually that is.Don't think Luanda will be my first destination however.Regards,Harry

What a coincidence that Vangelis flew this flight as a test.I just happened to see that long MD-11 flight on flightaware, and thought I'd ask about it. It's amazing they don't do a stopover but then again an ER with PIP does have long legs. I am glad the PDMG MD-11 is an ER with PIP!RhettFS box: E8500 (@ 3.80 ghz), AC Freezer 7 Pro, ASUS P5E3 Premium, BFG 8800GTX 756 (nVidia 169 WHQL), 4gb DDR3 1600 Patriot Cas7 7-7-7-20 (2T), PC Power 750, WD 150gb 10000rpm Raptor, Seagate 500gb, Silverstone TJ09 case, Vista Ultimate 64ASX Client: AMD 3700+ (@ 2.6 ghz), 7800GT

The flight is indeed operated nonstop. The MD-11 in use is N278WA which has ER fuel tanks installed. The plane is also a special modification for the customer, its only got 113 seats in an all VIP layout. We carry cargo on the way down to Luanda, and there is usually none coming back. The flight is operated 3 days a week, carrying a cockpit of 4 (2x Captain 2x FO) and 12 flight attendants. On arrival in Luanda they all rest for a minimum required time, and then return to IAH with the aircraft. As far as the fuel is concerned...here are a few numbers... on a recent flight that was operated at full passenger capacity, the total payload was about 38,000 lbs and had a t/o fuel of just over 273,000 lbs, arriving in LAD with around 20,000 lbs. Hope that helps...
