August 24, 200223 yr When in LNAV mode and NAV1 is set to AUTO it switches from VOR to VOR. Is there a way to force NAV1 to tune to the next VOR in the route and have course set to the inbound radial. Is this part of the realism or am I missing something. I've had PIC767 a couple weeks now and I'm starting to get comfortable but there are still many nuances to master. Thanks ... Rich
August 24, 200223 yr Nope. When in "auto" the tuning is fully under software control. Also, I wonder if you knew about it, but 767's autopilot can't track VOR radials so you would get nowhere even if it was possible. You bet, it is part of the realism. :-)Michael J. Michael J.
August 25, 200223 yr Not quite sure what you're trying to do here, Rich, but...As I understand it, you can leave the A/P in LNAV yet still observe manually ("Remote") tuned VOR station indications on your EHSI VOR (Expanded/Full) page...and, depending on the available groundstations, the FMC will attempt to radio-update its position using the manually tuned station (via a manual entry on the FMC "NAV RAD" page (i.e. "VOR L" line) and other stations. The F/O's (i.e. "Right") VOR is still free to Autotune (This appears to be different to PIC.... Selecting Exp/Full VOR seems to force both radios into Manual mode).A radial is selected by entering a 3 digit number in the scratchpad on the NAV RAD page and line-selecting this to the CRS line (below the "VOR L" frequency line).... or it can be done by at the same time as you enter the VOR frequency using the format XXX.XX/YYY, where X is the frequency and Y is the radial. Note that on later 767's, each of the two DME Interrogators (Transmitter/Receivers) has 5 channels. The manual tune option only uses one of these channels. Hope this is what you were asking?Cheers.Ian.
August 26, 200223 yr Ian,I think its just a matter of transitioning to an FMC that is very realistic. I read the section in the manual that describes how the IRS tunes VOR's to verify its position. The reason for having the FMC tune the next VOR is so when I switch the EHSI from MAP mode to EXP VOR mode the VOR and radial will be set. I can set it manually if that's the way it works and using the XXX.XX/YYY is a nice tip. Thanks .. Rich
August 26, 200223 yr > I read the section in the manual that >describes how the IRS tunes VOR's to verify its position.Actually, it's the FMC which tunes the VOR's, Rich ;-) The FMC is the navigation brain on the 767 and uses the best available position sources to update its position. For example, if two suitable DME stations are available, it will use these instead of the triple mix IRS position. The IRS's will be idling in the background, however, sending regular position reports. If the DME-DME position varies too much from the IRS position, the FMC will switch back to IRS (or back to the next most accurate position source). Despite the IRS's being pretty low on the priority list, any discrepancy between the radios and the IRS's will put the IRS back in charge (perhaps Boeing designed it this way because of the IRS's triple redundancy and the fact that groundstation reliability is an unknown "quantity"). >The reason for having the FMC tune the next VOR is so when I >switch the EHSI from MAP mode to EXP VOR mode the VOR and >radial will be set.To be honest, I'm not sure what happens to the radial (CRS) setting on the VOR control panel when the FMC is autotuning the radios (Perhaps our resident pilots can tell us if the CRS knob is disabled in AUTO mode?).You will note that Line 2 of the NAV RAD page shows you which radial the aircraft is currently on with respect to the tuned VOR's (These will be outbound radial values. I guess you'd need the reciprocal of these?).Hope this helps.Cheers.Ian.
