trimmimg aircraft during landing

Featured Replies

just a question for real 767 pilots or pilots in general. when hand flying an approach to landing do u trim the aircraft so as to keep it in a slight (say 2 degree) nose high attitude and then only apply back pressure on the yoke during the flare?? also when doing an autoland in pic767 i notice that it will not flare the aircraft on landing- why is this??

AP does flare - it must otherwise it would hit the runway with 700 fpm .. ouch.Michael J.

gooper,Your text suggests a different question than the subject line, but just to be clear, it is considered very bad technique (in any aircraft I am aware of, not just the 67) to trim during the flare and landing. On final, yes, the aircraft should always be trimmed up to a "hands-off" state (you actually trim to an airspeed, not an attitude per se), but once you start the flare, keep your fingers away from the the trim button!Kevin in CYOW

I too can confirm that the AP does flare in auto-land mode.Meekal

I think you ment to say trim "buttons" (there are two that control the pitch trim on a real 757/767) Both the yoke mounted thumb switch and main stan trim are what are called "split switches")Anyway, in answer to the real world question regarding the a/p - a/t actions during the flare (remember the CAT III)Flare submode kicks in at 45' when the a/ps start the flare manuverFLARE replaces the G/S captured icon on the ADIat 25 feet RA (radar altitude)the A/T starts retarding the thrust levers to idle and the A/T annuciation cjanges from SPD to IDLEif a slip exists due to runway align submode, wings levelled when ROLLOUT mode is engaged at about 5'A/Ps start lowering the nose wheel to the runway at 5' RA plus two seconds with pitch attitude less than 2 degrees. As far as trimming on manual approach, it is an art at times. Just remember that if you get close to the runway and tower instructs you to go around and you have a ton of nose up trim, you will be very busy for a few seconds arresting your descent, gear and flaps and power.....not a good time to be fighting trim settings.Timothy
