Autobrakes

Featured Replies

Hey all --I am wondering, does the different levels of autobrake have an effect in the simulator(how fast the plane slows down), or is it just 'for show?' Clear skies

Yes it does. It is not for show.Michael J.

Michael --Thanks for clearing that up. Me and a friend were debating that point, and I just lost :)

"Yes it does. It is not for show."Are you sure, Michael? I thought, some time ago, one of the PIC team told us that it was not possible to vary the autobraking levels in FS2000/2002?Of course, I could be mistaken :-hahCheers.Ian.

>"Yes it does. It is not for show." >>Are you sure, Michael? Ian,Since you asked - I am no longer 100% sure. I would use either setting 3 or 4 depending on runway length and I think I saw difference in the rollout length. But honestly I haven't done exact measurements to be absolutely sure. Also, I don't recall and statement from the PIC team on the subject. Maybe someone could search through the archives.Michael J.

Hi there,I heard somewhere else that the autobraking mechanism was indeed variable. Although there is no way of programming variable braking (i.e. continiously pressing the .-button gives a 100% brake force), it can be simulated in a different way.It is achieved by programming button-presses (.-key) per interval. So setting 1 would be a keypress every second, setting 4 every 4 per second, etc.The low settings (1-4) could actually be considered anti-skid systems activated. This technique was earlier used in early FS5 GPWS add-ons and gives a different brakingforce per selected setting.Greetings,Roel Wessels

Well, I just run some tests and it looks like I (and Roel) were right - variable autobraking does seem to work in PIC. I used my favorite relatively short runway at St.Maarten for my tests. I did not use thrust reverse or spoilers and relied exclusively on auto-braking. When I set brakes at 2 my rollout took almost full runway length, when I then used max auto-brakes - I stopped close to the runway mid point. Each time my touchdown was very precise - just in case you think I screwed that part. ;-)Michael J.

Michael, is anything in PIC "just for show" :D

yes: the left/right left/right-front and left/right-back views!! :( :(Now about the autobraking:it shouldn't be a problem as you probably know with the CH rudder pedals you can input braking with the 'toe pressure' and it does vary. So i don't see the problem of creating a command that gives a varied braking effectiveness.Cheers

I stand corrected... Must have been thinking about another sim :-hahCheers.Ian.P.S. Looking forward to stopping much quicker now :-)
