767 EMERGENCY ESCAPE SLIDES

Featured Replies

Hi I know the 767 has escape slides for each door (I hope ;)) except for the wing exit. The 747 and some other aircraft have a system where the slides open automatically when the doors are armed. Is this system on the 767?? I never noticed anything in the cockpit to arm the doors, is it just that the 767 does not have it or is it controlled by the flight crew in the back of the plane? Thank You.:-wave

I'm sure someone like Ian will correct me, but if memory serves, almost all emergency slides are done pretty much the same: they have a bar attached to the slide which when pulled will activate the inflation mechanism. That bar is hooked into the appropriate place on the door/floor such that when the door is opened, the tab is pulled, the slide inflates. This is done by the flight attendants ("Flight crew arm doors for departure" or some similar announcment time) and obviously reversed after landing.Take care!P

That's right. When the doors are armed a girt bar is attached to the door sill. If the door is opened armed the power assist on the door raises it fully, pulling the slide from it's pack and (hopefully) the slide inflates. The arming lever is adjacent to the door handle on the insdie of the door. The doors are armed after doors are closed (depending on aircraft position and company policy) and disarmed approaching the gate. If this is forgotton the slides should disarm when the door is opened from the outside, which is why most airlines have the gate agent open the door.BTW, the overwing exits do have slides contained in packs at the trailing edge of the wing. The doors are not armed from within the cabin. Like doors 3 on a 4 door configuration, they are 'permantently' armed for regular operations.
