Hi,Generally you should work your way up the controllers (ie GND TWR APP CTR)for the area you're in, however, sometimes some controllers who are acting as CTR will not issue clearances.I find if there is any doubt just send them a personal message (.msg

From what I have read on Vatsim you only need to broadcast on UNICOM if other planes are nearby. If there is no one within 40 miles of you then you can just go.Also, on FSNAV, you may want to check on VATSIM because FS NAV logs in as another Pilot and takes up server resources.Mark.
