October 25, 200223 yr Hi guysJust want to ask you if it is possible to combine EPIC and Keyboard emulators like Hagstroem. I am thinking of using two kbd emulators for my FMCs and EPIC for the rest of the stuff. They would run on different computers though so IMHO there shouldn't be a problem right?Regards Mats JohanssonPMDG Flight Test Dept | Asus Z270-A | Intel i5-7600K @ 4.8 GHz OC/H2O | nVidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB OC/O2|
October 25, 200223 yr If they're on different computers then I can't see any way for them to interfere with one another. Even if they were on the same machine, I wouldn't expect a problem since the emulator plugs in just like a keyboard and the EPIC goes into an ISA slot or USB port (depending upon which one you get).Peter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gifBFU Forums Moderator

http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/logo75t.gifBush Flying Unlimited"At home in the wild"Looking for adventure? October 26, 200223 yr Author Thanks PeterConfirms my thought about it. Here's another thought though. I will (probably) run like this:1 PC for the main FS20021 PC for the EPIC interface1 PC for FMC(x2) thus needing two keyboard emulators for each CDU1 PC for captains side PM displays/upper EICAS with a keyboard emulator for the EFIS controland finally1 PC for F/O side displays/lower EICAS with a keyboard Is it possible to connect two emulators to the same computer? to me that would be like connecting to keyboards which shouldn't be possible without trouble Mats JohanssonPMDG Flight Test Dept | Asus Z270-A | Intel i5-7600K @ 4.8 GHz OC/H2O | nVidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB OC/O2|
October 27, 200223 yr If memory serves correctly, the emulator is designed to be attached along with a keyboard so that you can still use the keyboard on the system. As a result, my guess would be that chaining two emulators would also work. Of course, the way to find out would be to try it. The only problem I could forsee is a collision on the data cable. So, it's just a question of whether or not the emulator takes care of that. What's the EPIC doing on the separate PC? Is it sending control messages to the other systems via WideFS or something?Peter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gifBFU Forums Moderator
October 27, 200223 yr Author Thanks for your swift reply!I will have to try. I mean a Hagstroem is not that expensive :-)Regarding the EPIC running on a separate comp. I always thought EPIC was relatively demanding. Maybe I'm wrong here. It will communicate via WideFS and FSUIPC. And besides that I would like to divide the system in as many parts there are power buses in the real thing. :-) I may be well out of line here... When I think about it I don't think that argument will sustain that long...lolBasically it was all about dividing the computation load! Do you have another opinion/suggestion? Let me hear it! :-) Mats JohanssonPMDG Flight Test Dept | Asus Z270-A | Intel i5-7600K @ 4.8 GHz OC/H2O | nVidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB OC/O2|
October 27, 200223 yr Yes, you can daisy chain Hagstrom encoders. I asked Hagstrom about this before I ordered mine. The only limitation is that the total cable length should not exceed 10 feet (3 metres). You may have to make your own cables to keep the total under this.Peter
October 27, 200223 yr Peter,Thanks for the confirmation on chaining the Hagstroms.Mats,The amount of computation of the EPIC would depend on how much you made it do. So, I guess you'll just have to give it a try. I don't have one myself but for just flipping some switches I can't imagine it using too much CPU power. Let us know how it works out.Peter http://bfu.avsim.net/sigpics/PeterR.gifBFU Forums Moderator
