Glue and varnish help

Featured Replies

What is a good glue to join a printed transparency to plexiglasss and then a printed piece of paper on top of that? Also, what type of varnish can I use on the paper to help protect it? And what is the best way to apply it? Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,Joining transparency to plexi, I would use a clear double faced tape. You have to lay it down carefully, starting at one end to keep any airbubbles out, but in the long run, I think it is easier than any glue and will be 100% clear. If you don't need "clear" and only transluscent, you might try 3M 77 spray adhesive. It is pretty strong, but won't be an absolute clear solution like the tape.As to a top coat...a self adhesive clear laminating plastic will work great and you can find these in a stationery store (not the type that requires a heat type of laminator). If you want a matte finish, then check an art store for this film. It is usually called "frisket" material. Any kind of varnish will give you streaks and since it takes some time to dry, will pick up dust and ruin the finish. Also, any lacquer, or other paintable substance will soak into your paper and give undesirable results.Regards,Kenwww.DakenSkys.com

Can you print on that laminating material with an inkjet, or is it too thick with the backing on?Richard

Hi Richard,Printing on laminated film with an inkjet might require some experimenting. They have clear transparency film specially made for inkjet printers so it depends on the surface treatment of the film. Matte finishes might work better than a glossy type.Another trick to try...if the surface of the laminating film doesn't work well with the ink jet, you can buy a can of matte finish clear spray in a can, and give a light coat to the surface. This may be enough to allow the ink to adhere. You'll have to experiment a bit though. If you are experimenting with the 3M 77 spray, or the double faced tape, then you can definately use transparency film made for an inkjet.Hope that helps!Regards,Kenwww.DakenSkys.com
