August 12, 200520 yr For the next build for my simulator I'm considering using the Go-Flight modules in the center pedestal for the radios.Unfortunately, these are a long way from looking like Collins or Gables head units so I was thinking of building authentic looking lightplates for them.I need to know how wide these units are if anyone uses these radios from this company. I don't seem to be able to find any way to contact this company to send an e-mail inquiry. They need to be no wider than 5.75" on the faceplate to fit the standard module bay in the B727, and there are two radios side by side. If these modules are too wide, then I'll get the kits they offer to build my own "Collins" radio heads to fit the pedestal. Thanks!
August 13, 200520 yr I eventually found a link direct to Go-Flight's site, but unfortunately I didn't find any specs except height.I got the info from another pilot at my airline. Much too wide for a standard bay. After researching their website for the kits, the board for the radio, plus knobs, displays, and buttons totals more than $40US over the finished product.I think I'll buy the radio and then K-ball it and use it the way I need to to build the radio heads. How about that? They offer you a kit for the radio and then charge you more for the privilage of building it yourself. Unbelievable.
August 13, 200520 yr I have several Go-Flight units and find them to be very reliable and easy to use. They are a company who designs and sells the units. The JohnMy first SIM was a Link Trainer. My last was a T-6 IIAMD Ryzen 7 7800 X3D@ 5.1 GHz, 32 GB DDR5 RAM - 3 M2 Drives. 1 TB Boot, 2 TB Sim drive, 2 TB Add-on Drive, 6TB Backup data hard driveRTX 3080 10GB VRAM, Meta Quest 3 VR Headset
August 13, 200520 yr I'm not knocking the quality of their product. Also, the assembled unit is cheaper, not more expensive than the separate components which make up the unit. I'm not against a company making a profit. If they didn't, they wouldn't stay in business very long.I believe my electronic skills are up to the task of re-arranging the components for my needs. What I don't understand, is why the separate components that make up the radio is more expensive than an assembled unit. I doubt seriously that they make their own components other than etching the board, and that is probably farmed out too.
August 13, 200520 yr In general it is very expensive for companies to sell low volume items. Almost by definition, their fulfillment processes are very inefficient. Quite likely the quoted price does not cover the company's true cost, but is an accomodation to customers needing to buy replacement/repair components.Mikewww.mikesflightdeck.com
August 13, 200520 yr Bonjour Michael,I've just received parts from GoFlight, 3 GF-166 and 2 GF-46.It will cover all my radio needs, i did not really test them for now, but i'm satisfied with the look and feel.- Did cost VERY MUCH to me, because of international shipping and unbelievable local taxes at delivery (don't ask) -I made my own MCP with IOCards, but as not being a good builder, i ran into lot of problems with displays, too much wiring, too much work, too much precision needed. So i decided to go for premade stuff for the other parts needing displays, and now i'm done with that, with just a USB plug.I would say if you have experience on electronics but not a lot of time, it may be better to build your switchs and buttons with IOcards or something, cause it is easy, cheap and quick, but to go for GoFLight would be a good choice for more complicated parts like radio displays.I'll tell you i don't see the real interest of GoFlight "kits" regarding their prices...Well, just my 2 cents. If you have lot of time to deal with building, just go for a whole IOCards DIY system, this is the most affordable solution, and maybe one of the most powerfull (SIOC).
August 15, 200520 yr Another reason why the individual parts may cost more is because their assembly process might be highly automated. If they load up a pick and place machine with reels, tubes and trays of components, they just flip a switch and potentially hundreds of units pop out the other end. Even if they subcontract the PCB assembly off shore, companies like that typically buy in large quantities and costs go down and labor is cheap. As soon a person has to get involved, pulling parts and making kits, that takes time, and as we all know, time is money.
August 16, 200520 yr The Go Flight radio interface is AWESOME!! Some very notable builders, including James Price, have used them to convert real airline radios to work with MSFS. The finished product is amazing. I used them in the past with engraved panels too. Here is some useful feedback from Rob Howard, who has done an impressive job integrating the RMK-166 cards with his real 747-400 radios.[a href=http://www.goflightinc.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=9;t=1]Rob Howard's RMK-166 Converted Radios[/a]Robert
August 16, 200520 yr Thanks for the link to that post. That sounds very interesting and I wonder if I could do the same thing with the older style 'mechanical' type radio heads used in the B727.
August 17, 200520 yr I can't get the images up in this forum. Any ideas?David>The Go Flight radio interface is AWESOME!! August 17, 200520 yr I couldn't see them either, but the text was helpful. Either the site removed them or he has a mistake in the syntax.Or he attempted to upload from a site that doesn't allow linking.
August 17, 200520 yr Perhaps, alternative way you could Rob Howard's work check it out at http://www.phidgetsusa.com/OnsiteProjectExamples/robh.aspIt may not have any pixes of his RMK166 boards or so, but get idea what he have done with his flightdeck.
