My recommendation for an inexpensive XGA LCD projector ...

Featured Replies

I bought a Sharp Notevision XGA projector from Costco for $900 three-ish months ago, and I have been very happy with it, so I thought I'd give it a shout. Althought it's really geared towards being used for presentations, it is serving very well for both PC graphics applications and DVDs. Ironically, although my main goal was to get a projector for my "out of the window" Flight Simulator view, I have ended up using a lot more for general gaming (e.g. Doom 3, World of Warcraft, etc.) and movies than for flight simming lately! It's a XR-11XC. I have it mounted on my basement ceiling using a Peerless mount, upside-down, projecting onto a $40.00 60"x48" artist's canvas (untreated white fabric stretched over a wood frame) to great effect. In fact, lately the wife and I have been watching quite a few movies and TV series (e.g. the "new" Battlestar Galactica) on it!I have the projector mounted about 8' from the "screen", which fills up about 90% or more of the canvas. Image quality is very good, even for HD-format movies.I am posting this because I had been searching for a reasonably priced XGA projector for about a year, and this one has exceeded my expectations in every way.Note that I am using it in a room that does not have many windows, and I turn off most of the lights during use. That said, I'm running its bulb in "Eco" mode, which will theoretically extend the bulb life from 2000 to 3000 hours.Have a great 2006,Dave Blevins

Dave,I don't know if I'm more impressed by the equipment report or the fact that your wife watches Battlestar Galactica. :DMikewww.mikesflightdeck.com

One of my buddies at work's GF/Fiance likes the NEW Galactica only...my guess is that since the main character is female instead of male, it makes it more easy to watch than a bunch of "testosterone heads" all shooting each other...so they ignore the violence and see the story for what it is...Good rebirth of an awesome show....LIVE ON GALACTICA!!!back to the sim....

Sorry if I draw this thread further off-topic: are you talking about Galactica - the mini-series? I saw it in one go! Could not let it down.BTW, If you're looking for a far more intriguing sci-fi you should try Spielberg's "Taken" - this one is a 10 episode series and it gets more and more exciting as you near the end. I watched it over three days. And get this - my "anti-sci-fi" wife watched it too :-)How would a young Padawan say? "It's intoxicating" .Now back on-track. The main problem I see with LCD projectors is the visible pixels. I have a 1024x768 DLP 2000 lumens projector and the only pixels I see are from the video card :-). I am sure that a 800x600 DLP projector could beat a 1024x768 LCD one any day (on image quality). Am I right? Any experience with 800x600 DLP + MSFS?

Thanks Richard but this is an OLD article about how to make a "projector" using a "cannibalized" TFT screen. No, I don't know German but I "understood" it nevertheless since I read this article @6mo ago (or more) in English. I am sure that with a bit of "search" on Tom's Hardware site it is possible to find it again.
