January 15, 200620 yr Several months ago I mentioned I got the aluminum frame for my curved screen, using Warvet's (Tim) principal. After I got it, it wasn't quite the way I wanted it..... (what else is new... right?) Anyway, I finally got it back with some excellent adjustments and am in the process of installation. Here is a couple of pics of my mess, I'll try to keep you up to date here or you can visit my web-site at this page (beware, I'm in the midst of redoing my site): http://www.a340project.us/gallery9.htmSince I just got started on the assembly I'll have more info later.
January 15, 200620 yr Hi MattSuper setup you have there!... wondering if you have tried Tim's method with the single projector and if you might comment on what you think of the result ie. is it worth the effort?CheersIan
January 15, 200620 yr Hi Ian, Tim's method is an excellent method. Regarding the use of a single projector, I think you're referring to stretching the screen. It's a matter of taste, I would think. There are two things to consider when stretching the screen, 1)the resolution of the projector, low res and you'll start to see the pixels when stretching and 2) whether you would mind the objects to be skewed (widened). I'd prefer the none stretching method.I'm using the curved mirror to adjust for the curvature of the screen. Which I'll demonstrate as I'm assembling my screen setup.
January 17, 200620 yr Matt, You're slowly but surely getting closer to a visual system similar to a CAT IV sim :-).Hats off!
January 17, 200620 yr Thanks MattI was intending using the curved mirror & screen approach but with just a single projector. I'm interested in how much I would gain compared to my current flat screen direct projection. Can't wait to see those 3 projectors on that screen of yours!!
January 18, 200620 yr Hi Matt,The last couple of says I am doing tests with a curved screen and 2plexiglass mirrors.I am running into the issue that the horizonline will bent down in the middle a bit and then come up at the sides. With 2 projctors it lkook like a very flat VV.Because the mirrors can be bent only a little also the screen can be bent only a little. In my opinion not enough. To get the projector as low as possible ( some the distortion to correct will be as little a possible ), I did not place it just above the screen, but on top of the windscreen. The projector is facing up and backwards , beaming onto the mirror and than forward down onto the screen. The lower the projector position, the better the image.Perhaps you can share some suggestions. I will do some extra testing this evening.Perhaps you have some tips for me . 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
January 18, 200620 yr Hi Gerard, I don't want to get to far here without really get into my setup. But, at least I can share my thoughts and plans. Most of my proposed setup has been done by just experimenting, and far from a permanent setup. But I got it to work.Keep in mind, I'm not trying to stretch the screen, I want a nice even projection across a curved screen. My mirror is made of 12" by 24" plastic (bendable), covered with Mylar mirror film (gives me maximum light reflection and the least distortion). I'll be able to curve the top and bottom of the mirror either less or more by wire adjustments, independently. I need to be able to do that because the curved screen is smaller at the bottom them the top.I'm going to start working on the mirror today (Making brackets and adjustable) as I'm in the process I'll take some photo's and post them.BTW, If I'm not answering anyones questions, please ask again, I won't be offended:)
January 19, 200620 yr Hi Matt,The experiences I had are not that perfect. If you are putting the projector on top of the screen and the mirror on top of the cockpit, the mirror will make the horizonline bend downwards a bit. When bending the mirror to make the image wider the horizonline stays bend a bit downwards at the sides. If you use just one projector that is no big deal, but if you plan to use two projectors, like I want to do, on the same screen the horizonline looks like a flattened //.In my case the two projctors where put on top of the windows. They are beaming backwards/up onto the mirrors and then forward/downwards onto the curved screen. This gives a flattened // horizonline. With bending the mirror the image gets wider , but no difference in getting the horioznline horizontal. To get the sides mor evertical you can use , and keystone, and bent the mirror more at the top than at the bottom.Even letting the curved screen hang a bit backwards did not solve my horizon issue.Either I have to use two straight screens set in an angle, or one wide screen, but than the wall at the right can be seen to much. 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
January 19, 200620 yr Gerald, we're having too much fun:) The challenge continues:)I've finally got the mirror together, but the stupid problem is.... How do I mount it on top of the shell. So I'm stuck, staring at my shell and mirror and trying to figure out how to do this, without redoing it over and over again..... What seems to be have been a simple task is turning into a difficult one:))
January 19, 200620 yr Here's a couple of pics of how I braced the mirror and curve it.http://www.ifsbi.org/photopost/showphoto.p...87&limit=recenthttp://www.ifsbi.org/photopost/showphoto.p...88&limit=recent
January 19, 200620 yr Hi Matt,Is your horizonline really horizontal ?I prefer using a curved screen with 2 projectors , but up to now the results are not satisfying.Btw You can glue the mirror on top or make some kind of "chase" you can put on top. 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
January 23, 200620 yr Just want to add a few more photos. Still working on adjustments and placement of projector and mirror.I get e-mails regarding lining up of one projector and and another. First of all I'm just starting out with one projector, which is a third of the overall screen (about 52 degrees). Once the other projectors come in to play, the lining up will be done by curving the mirror. Less of a curve on top then the bottom of them mirror.More explanations here: http://www.a340project.us/gallery10.htm
January 23, 200620 yr I stepped away from the curved screen with 2 projectors.Horizontal lines are impossible to get exactly horizontal. So be aware. My current approach and already tested is 2 straight screens in a small angle. The left sreen is standing exactly before the captains part and the left screen in a small angle to cover the right view (seen from the captains side ).Both screens are made of a wooden frame with white - no light - curtain attached to it.I used the plastic side as front side. The projectors are standing on top of the cockpit shell and they are pointing up/backwards ( + - 70 degrees up ).The mirrors ( 90x60 cm = 36" x 24" ) are pointing downwards /forward to the screen. In this way I can have the screens not to far away from the cockpit windows. 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
