Upgrade of Hardware/Software questions

Featured Replies

Hey guys,I need some serious help. I have a client who actually runs a virtual flight center in Southern California. He's been having some serious issues with his flight sim software (Eagle Sim) and wants to upgrade to something that is more commercially available.Currently, he's using some Win2k PC's, but the systems get bogged down and the graphics suffer. He has full sim cockpits, with Heads up and Heads down displays. Do you know of any flight sims that will support the HUD and HDD on separate monitors? Also, which flight sim would you recommend for doing modern combat sims, using the hardware listed below:Hotas flight stick and Cougar Throttle. Quite a few of the Cockpits support multiple switches, foot pedals etc. The reason for the move completely away from the Eagle Sim software is because it doesn't support Direct X 9 and he needs more robust machines with better graphics.I've thought about installing more powerful computers and then allowing him to use his old software on a virtual machine install of Win2K, but the chance of success with something like that is pure conjecture.Any thoughts, opinions or links for further research will be greatly appreciated.Jess

Well, seems like the right place to get answers :-) If not, we'll try another forum also.

Jess- I'm no expert here-way beyond my level of expertise- but perhaps I can point you in a couple of directions. 1. Post your query in the FSX/FlightSim Hardware Discussion. You might direct a question to Jim Cooper and be fortunate enough to strike up a conversation. Jim is involved professionally in simulators and is a remarkable source of expertise. 2.Do a search for the Alpha Jet Flight Simulator site. This relates to adapting FS9 to an actual military jet training simulator- used for pilot training, of course, for this real aircraft. 3.From my own experience, Windows XP and MS FS9(CoF) are a proven combination- particularly when it comes to stability and a widely known body of knowledge. I would think in a conversion such as you have described, the last thing you want are surprises in the software. I run triple monitors/triple views- LFwd,Fwd,RFwd with this software to produce a 180

Alex,What hardware are you running. Do you have a site with your setup details?More info on your setup would be great.David

David- sorry,I don't have a site. My system is a 4 year old AMD XP2200 1.8 GHz processor, 1.28GB Ram and triple Geforce FX5200 video cards, all running flawlessly in Win XP & FS9. This is a pretty standard multi mon setup with the "desktop" extended across the 3 monitors- one is LCD, the others are 7 yr old 19" CRTs. Views are LFwd,Fwd,RFwd It is quite straight forward to align and synchronize the views so that the horizon remains synchronized in roll and pitch. The result is a 48" wide field of view covering the full 180

Thanks for the info Alex, I'll do a search now.RegardsDavid

Doh,Not having much luck finding the threads you mentioned. found one you have participated in, but no details on how.Could you possible post link to thread.ThanksDavid

Hi David- haven't got a clue on how to post a link! At going on 76, that's something I never learned! However, experimenting with multi monitors for the past seven years has led to some interesting discoveries- happy to try to pass on a bit.In forum Search, click on Use Advanced Search formThe Keyword is- VIEW_FORWARD be sure to use the underscoreTo save time, search on- MSX Flight Sim /sub forum Hardware DiscussionSearch for Subject and MessageClick on Search all topicsThat should get you to a list of topics- one of which is Triple Monitor Setup Help Please by Kimchoc, started July 6/07.Hope this helpsAlex Reid CYYJ

Or alternatively, just do an advanced search for keyword topic: 27159There are several threads there with info on multi mon setup.Cheers Alex Reid

Thanks Alex

David, these types of multi monitor setps are easy. You need only one video card for 2 displays and 2 cards for 3 or 4 displays. Displays are configured in your video card driver software and then its a matter of opening new view in FS , undocking it and moving/dragging it over to one of your displays. Resizing it so it does'nt extend past the monitor. Heres a pic of mine. 4 displays, 1 processor(AMD3400 on 757 platform), 1 AGP card, 1 PCI card, 1 gig ram, 2 WD Raptors in raid0. Nothing fancy, no OC on anything. FPS around 22 in sky, sometimes a little less than 10 if very busy airport. AI is at 15%, graphics relatively high. FPS is a matter of personal preference anyway.Views are same as Alex's. 2d views. Aligned within each planes config file very easily and accurately.I'd really like to have Matrox TH2G but no funds for that this year. This is the next best thing for the simple purchase of a good PCI card for $100.00.Second pic is simply two views with 1 AGP card. Hardly any FPS loss.Third pic, a little different two monitor setupHope this helps,http://eecherrors.homestead.com/monitor3.jpghttp://eecherrors.homestead.com/2monscreen.jpg http://eecherrors.homestead.com/updown.jpg

Hi Kimchoc- If you went to TH2GO you would only have a 90
