February 16, 200323 yr Has there been any meaningful progress in hard drive technology in the last 3 years ?. I am not talking about gigabytes of storage - I know you can get plenty of it these days but speed and seek time. I am planning to upgrade and I wonder whether I should still keep my ATA100 IBM 7200 rpm drive which though only 13.5 GB in size has proven to be very reliable. I don't care for storage but I definitely would appreciate extra performance in FS2002 and I do understand that SCSI technology doesn't really buy you much while simming.Michael J. Michael J.
February 17, 200323 yr not really, just increase in cache amounts. Serial ATA performance is not much faster than IDE. I wouldn't spend money for anything you won't notice. If th 13GB is enough space, keep it
March 5, 200323 yr Actually besides the fact of larger cache sizes ( Which provide for an amazing speed increase ) Hard drives have seen a dramatic increase in areal Density per platter. What this means is the manufacturers have found a way to more storage space on a smaller number of platters. There has also been an decrease in seek times on most newer hard drives. If I was you I would use the IBM for storage and invest in an 80 Gig WD Drive w the 8 Meg of cache. These are truly amazingly fast drives. The decrease in loading times and tansfer rates can make a huge improvement in a system.Bobby
