March 14, 200323 yr Commercial Member I replaced my old Asus mobo yesterday with a new MSI K7N2G-L (nForce2 chipset) board, and now I've got a problem with my GeForce4 Ti4600. I'm getting random lockups, especially (but not only) when running 3D applications. Usually they manifest as screen freezes from which I eventually have to reset, but several times I've gotten errors as well, and always they're with my nVidia display drivers. Problem is, I never had any trouble out of this card with my old board (Asus A7M266), and I've tried four versions of Detonator now with exactly the same results.I've also tried flashing the BIOS to the most recent version using LiveUpdate, but it didn't seem to affect the problem at all. I'm just about to try another brand of board, perhaps an Asus A7N8x, but I thought I'd consult you hardware gurus before doing so. For reference, I've disabled AGP 8x in my BIOS (my video card only supports 4x), and tried playing with the fast-write settings and AGP aperture (hey, gotta try, right?) but no difference whatsoever was seen in stability. Here are my system specs:AMD 1800XP processorMSI K7N2G-L mobo450w Power supply2x 256 PC2100 DDR RAMGeForce4 Ti4600 videoCreative Audigy soundWinXP ProDirect-X 9.0So far my primary tests in 3D have been done with 3DMark 2003 (demo version) and in almost every case the video froze on trying to load the second test (Battle for Proxycon), but on my last pass last night, I got all the way to the vertex shader test before getting a freeze. I've never made it all the way through without lockups.Any help or insight would be surely appreciated.thanks, Bill Womack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit my FS Blog or follow me on Twitter (username: bwomack). March 14, 200323 yr Why did you get the MSI K7N2G-L model with the built in graphics? the K7N2-L is cheaper and not needed with your 4600. I've only played with the MSI K7N2G-L while using the video it comes with, and had no problems. I wonder if the chipset drivers are interfering with the video drivers. You have disabled the onboard video right?sorry about the freezes, sound like bad board or possibly memory.
March 14, 200323 yr Author Commercial Member I got the integrated graphics model 'cause that's all my local supplier had. Normally I'd do an online order, but I didn't have the time to wait, what with a dead computer and all. I think it probably was a bad board or an imcompatibility with my vid card. I'm trying out an Asus A7N8X tonight... and keeping my fingers crossed.thanks, Bill Womack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit my FS Blog or follow me on Twitter (username: bwomack). March 15, 200323 yr Your motherboard should disable the onboard video as soon as it detects an AGP card in the slot. I don't think thats an issue.Did you do a complete reinstall of Windows? If not, I'd suggest you do. Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
March 15, 200323 yr Author Commercial Member Thanks, John. I went ahead yesterday and swapped it out for an Asus A7N8X and everything instantly worked better. Seems like it might have been a bad board.
