June 25, 200322 yr Hey all, I just got my new Mobo and cpu up and running. It's an Athlon XP2000+ chip on a Biostar M7NCD pro Mobo. On any of the bench tests I've run I'm showing 1244 mhz on the clock speed. I've got the frontside bus set at 100 mhz (lowest setting) because if I set it higher the system won't boot at 133 or higher. it may be the heat transfer from the cpu to the heatsink but I'm not sure.Anyone have any ideas??Brian
June 25, 200322 yr Brian, that clock speed is way to low for your CPU.Do you have the jumper on the MOBO set to 266FSB?
June 25, 200322 yr Hi Brian, have a look in your BIOS for your memory timings. If your settings are set to something like 'aggressive' or 'automatic', it may be that your motherboard is trying to run both the CPU and the RAM at the same FSB. Check the correct FSB for your RAM, and then set the speeds accordingly. From the attached shot, it would appear that your motherboard has jumperless settings. Check this link: http://www.teccentral.de/artikel/artikel_226_s6.html Don't worry that the article is in German, the BIOS is in English all over the world :).Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
June 25, 200322 yr Author No Joy :-(I tried some new settings and followed the stuff on the page you sugested and it wouldn't run... system shut down and I could hear the PC speaker Beeping. I had to clear the CMOS and reset things back to 100mhz Frontside to get it to run again.Looks like this system will do for a while but I think I need to look at a whole new system one of these days.Brian
June 25, 200322 yr Hi Brian, the motherboard appears to support all the current chips that are available, so you shouldn't have to upgrade again. What type of memory do you have and what's your CPU temperature?Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg P.S.: Have you also checked the CPU ratio in the BIOS? The XP2000+ should run at 133MHz x 12.5 = 1667MHz.P.P.S.: Your BIOS allows for a lot of settings in the voltage department as well. The XP2000+ should be running at 1.75V.
June 26, 200322 yr Author Running about 50 c but it's 80 plus F here today and I have an extra fan dlowing into the case. My ram is a bit of a mish mash so I may get some new ram here in a bit. Gotta get a new vid card first though.Brian

June 26, 200322 yr I don't think the problem is the RAM. I think Gosta is right, you need to put the CPU ratio at 12.5, and the bus speed at 133 mhz. That was the problem I had with the board I have now, and that was the fix I needed to get going again.Oh BTW, this happened with the proper speed RAM(PC2100) for the XP 1700(which is what I had at the time).
June 26, 200322 yr Author Well, tried that set of settings and it got to the windows splash screen and then shut down.... I left the ratio at 12.5 but set the FSB back to 100 and it booted fine but I'm still getting 1245 mhz.I'm thinking it may be heat related so I'm going to get some more heat transfer paste for the heatsink and give that a try.Brian
June 26, 200322 yr Hi Brian,>I left the ratio at 12.5 but set the FSB back to 100 and it booted fine but I'm still getting 1245 mhz.:)). If you get it to work correctly, it should be 133MHz x 12.5 = 1667MHz - the XP2000+ is clocked at 1.66GHz.If you think it's heat related, bear in mind that too much thermal paste is also bad for your CPU. Check your CPU manual on how to remove the old stuff and how much to apply. The temperatures you posted earlier seem quite ok, keeping in mind that an underclocked CPU doesn't run that much cooler, for example if you draw a graph of the operating temperatures at all clock speeds from 100MHz to 1.66GHz, you'll see only a difference of maybe 5 degrees, if even that. But once you reach the nominal clock speed and start overclocking, the operating temperature will rise exponentially. Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
