June 27, 200322 yr Hello-This relates to another post which I saw but cannot track down again. My question is: Can you use more than one PCI card in a WINXP based system? The post I saw previously I think said that only one PCI card could be used in a multi monitor setup with WINXP. I would like to install 2 PCI cards in addition to my AGP. Thanks in advance for anyone's help. "... speed ... is the only reason for flying." - Clyde V. Cessna
June 28, 200322 yr If you have the slots available, you can install extra cards. You problem is going to be IRQ sharing. You may also have to set your BIOS to have the AGP card as primary for boot. Try setting it to the AGP setting if you have problems booting to the correct card after you installed the new cards. Bill Sieffert
June 28, 200322 yr Author Thank you for your reply. I am a little "video card shy". I had two monitors running a couple of months ago under WinMe with no problem. Thought I would "get smart" and get the full version of WinXP installed at a local computer shop, along with some other upgrades, figuring that I could run the same setup. Turns out that the ATI RageXL 8mb PCI card that ran flawlessly under WinMe will not run under WinXP. The computer shop "geniuses" that did the work on my system were clueless as to why this was. Everything else worked fine, until I cranked up FS2K2. I contacted MS support, and they could not figure it out, until, as a last resort before I got my own case # (whoopee) the tech asked if I had any other video cards installed. After taking it out, I had no problem running FS2K2 (but no second monitor, either). After making two calls to ATI, which are not toll free, I was told straight out that no ATI video card will work under WinXP for a second monitor. I had looked over all the info on their web site, but did not see that posted anywhere. Because the video shop sold me an OEM version of XP (ostensibly to save me money), Microsoft will not offer any support, and I surely will not go back to this shop, as they charged me another $35.00 when I asked them to check it out one more time. Oh, did I mention that my controller card did not work after I got my computer back? I had no internet access. No apology, no nothing from the computer store, except to say "That will be another $21.19 for a new PCI controller card". That makes one less PCI slot I have. Sorry about the whining, but I believe there is more talent that frequents this forum than in any so-called "computer repair shop". From now on, if I need any work done to my computer, I will do it myself, or send it to Dell. Again, thanks for your answer. "... speed ... is the only reason for flying." - Clyde V. Cessna
June 28, 200322 yr I hear you. If you can find a computer shop where one or more of the techs are also gamers, then you're in business. Most of those guys work on business systems and know their networks pretty good; but don't know the front side from the back side of a video card or sound card for that matter. They just don't keep up. The problem is finding one that's good that you can rely on. I had a great tech; but he had a nervous breakdown and is now hospitalized somewhere. Looking for a good one again preferably with good mental health.
