July 9, 200322 yr After over 2 years of use with no problems at all my computer has decided that it has to re-boot every 20 to 45 minutes. The only thing I've done lately is ad Milton's 680. It has the Runway info gauge and I tried the gauge out one time and right after that it started this re-boot thing. I had been flying the plane for a few days without any problems. I really didn't think the gauge was the problem but I deleted it anyway. I had read some time ago about some kind of a problem with the runway info gauge and that's why I deleted it.Then tried flying one of the planes I've been using for a long time with no problems before but it still does the re-boot thing every 20 to 45 minutes. What's the most probable cause for this constant re-booting? Anyone have an idea?I've got a Athlon 1.33GHz processor, 512M ram, A7M233 M-board TI4200 Nvidia video card w/128 M and Windoze 98 2nd edition.
July 9, 200322 yr Well.. Your video card might be faulty.. Is it only in games?Only in FS2002? Try reinstalling FS2002 and see if it helps. Also, try some different drivers.Your ram might have gone faulty too, or your video card.. Hmm, well, if it's only in FS2002, try reinstalling it, or get different drivers :)Hope it helps.
July 10, 200322 yr Author Thanks Zig,Appears to be heat related, running with side off computer seems to do ok.
July 10, 200322 yr Uh Owen,is it that hot in your place right now?Or is it just that two years' dust having settled on fans and fan shafts, slowing 'em down until some bad case of overheating is going to happen? Had it on my old computer - and it wasn't very nice at all. Took me some time to figure out what had really happened.Thomas
July 10, 200322 yr Well, is it only in FS2002?It could very well be heat related.. Tell me your Idle CPU temp, and what your cpu is.||And try taking off the cover and see what happens.. Yeah.||Do'h, I should've read your post more carefully, you did take off the cover :(
July 11, 200322 yr This is most likely a power supply problem. Check the voltages at the connectors and make sure they are correct within the tolerances allowed by the manufacturer or the OEM PS.
July 13, 200322 yr Author Sorry I didn't get back sooner but it seems that when the mods moved my question over here to the hardware forum the e-mail notification stopped working.I thought the problem was heat and I still think heat is at least part of the problem. I have an AMD 1.33G Athlon processor on an ASUS A7M266 MB. I don't know if I mentioned in my original post but, the little fan on the 761 system controller had stopped. I did get it working but it didn't seem to help at all. I also cleaned the fins on the processor heat sink. It was pretty dirty.I found a temp and voltage monitering program that came with the MB and the temps are from 51 to 60 degrees on the processor and from 33 to 36 degrees C on the MB. Supposedly these are ok. What do you think.I don't remember what all the different voltages are but according to the ASUS probe program they're within specs.Someone asked if it was hot here, yes it's rather warm but my air conditioner seems to be working ok.Above in a prior post I said that leaving the cover off stopped the re-booting...WRONG!!! I even tried a small fan on the desk blowing on the MB but that didn't help either.I did something last night that I never have done and that was shut the computer down overnight. I tried flying this afternoon and flew for 2 1/2 hour without a problem. I shut it down after this session and will try it again later. I have 3 computers on my desk, old ones that I kept when I upgraded. A 233MHz a 400MHz PII and my 1.33 Athlon and they all run 24/7 and I've never had any heating problems. Also, I need to add that this is a FS only problem. This is just about all I use this computer for (I get enough of them at work.) It will not re-boot running all day long, only when I start FS. (Except today it did fine after being off all night and most of the day.)
