July 19, 200322 yr I'm in the process of setting up a Win2K system, and I have a couple of questions. I have installed a mobile rack in my system, so I will have both a Win98SE system (the current system), and a Win2K system, but not simultaneously. Either one, but not both, of the drives will be in the system. I want to use the Win2K system for everything that I can... getting very tired of Win98's instability. The W98 drive should eventually be used just for games that won't run on Win2K. I want everything under Win2K that will work... MSIE, OE, utilities, and all games that don't hate Win2K.First off, which file system should I use? NTFS seems to be the way to go, but does that make stuff less likely to work with Win2K than Win98? Probably not, but...?And should I partition? My new drive is 120 gigs, and while there are a few reasons why I'd like to avoid partitioning, defragging 120 gigs sounds like no fun. My W98 drive is partitioned into 20 gigs for C drive, 60 for D drive. I use D for games only, and rarely defrag it, as there is little activity on it, usually. But C gets messy, and I defrag it, but defragging 20 gigs is not much of a bother. Scandisk is another problem with huge drives. For now, I have no intention of setting up a multiboot system, so should I avoid partitioning? If I use the same name in registering it... the one that shows up in Control Panel/System/General, will the retail sites and such that I use recognize me, so I don't have to go registering again everywhere?Much thanks for any help,

http://www.avsim.com/other/usaribbon.gifBob "FlyBert" StilesAVSIM Moderator

"Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"~Richard Harvey, 1/21/2003

The programs don't see the file system, just the end result(the files being saved/read on the disk). >And should I partition? Contrary to what I said in an earlier thread, yes, you should partition. On a disk that big you have no choice(defragging 120 would be a pain....)I would recommend 40 for your C: and install everything to this drive, especially system utilities. Then use the rest of the space for a game drive, or split it up into 2 more partitions and allow yourself a backup drive. 120 gigs is huge, you can do lots of things. Depends on what you want in your system :)>If I use the same name in registering it... the one that shows>up in Control Panel/System/General, will the retail sites and>such that I use recognize me, so I don't have to go>registering again everywhere? Not sure what you mean by this....you mean like signing into the avsim forums and things like that? If that is what you mean, then no, you won't be able to do things like that. All those things depend on cookies, which, AFAIK, can't be transfered system to system.
July 19, 200322 yr >No, use NTFS. The programs don't see the file system, just>the end result(the files being saved/read on the disk). That's what I hoped for, and since I'm not going to try to read this disk with W98, NTFS seems like the way to go.>Contrary to what I said in an earlier thread, yes, you should>partition. On a disk that big you have no choice(defragging>120 would be a pain....)That (the pain) I never doubted! :-)>I would recommend 40 for your C: and install everything to>this drive, especially system utilities.Sounds like a good idea, the 40 gigs. I used to use a 40-gig drive, and made C: five gigs. But that was way too small. Then when I went to this 80-gigger, I set C: to 20 gigs, but even though it's not full, it's getting close and some of my utilities are on D:. 40 sounds like a good number, not too bad to defrag.>Then use the rest of the space for a game drive, or split it>up into 2 more partitions and allow yourself a backup drive. >120 gigs is huge, you can do lots of things. Depends on what>you want in your system :)Well, the reason I'm on AVSIM is that I'm a flightsimmer, and that can eat HD space bigtime. I've been mainly a Flight Unlimited user, but with MSFS 2004 COF coming up, it's time to get into the MS sim and all the associated add-ons. But I'm also the moderator of Racing Fools here on AVSIM, so racing/driving sims are important too. Nuttin' like SPACE! :-) I'll make just one extra partition... make it C:and D: like I'm used to. Hey, I love tradition. :-hah>Not sure what you mean by this....you mean like signing into>the avsim forums and things like that? If that is what you>mean, then no, you won't be able to do things like that. All>those things depend on cookies, which, AFAIK, can't be>transfered system to system.I was once told that a site will recognize you by the name that's on the system, the one you see in SYSTEM/GENERAL as "Registered to". But I bet you're right, it's probably all cookies. But that would entail simply re-identifying myself just once, which would generate the cookie and bring this system back to being registered by a specific site. No big deal. Thanks much for your help, Fred!

http://www.avsim.com/other/usaribbon.gifBob "FlyBert" StilesAVSIM Moderator

"Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"~Richard Harvey, 1/21/2003

I came from Win98 as well to Win2k(my first NT based OS), and I thought after the first day of no reboots that surely something was wrong ;-) Now, with XP, the tradition continues, and I get mad if I have to reboot more than once a week, barring driver updates, and Windows Updates. Which need to be done in the linux style, no reboots for any reason, even updates to the core OS packages. The only reason to reboot any linux box is after you install a new kernel, which happens infrequently....

But more and more, I'm starting to like the idea, and when the $ becomes handy, I may just buy a third drawer for my mobile rack, another HD, and XP. If nothing else, I'd like to know that OS, so I'm able to help others with it. Right now I'm trying to aid a friend who has XP, and his first question was "What's a folder?" :-roll

http://www.avsim.com/other/usaribbon.gifBob "FlyBert" StilesAVSIM Moderator

"Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"~Richard Harvey, 1/21/2003
July 20, 200322 yr "....and his first question was "What's a folder?" :-roll"Ah, the good 'ole days of computing :-hah My sister is much like that, I have to show her how to do some things, but she learns fast. It is nice to pass your knowledge on to other people, very rewarding.
