July 27, 200322 yr I posted about this problem a few months ago, but I haven't been able to get rid of it, so I'm trying again, since I'm about to go crazy. :-boomSince I installed a Radeon 9700 video card I sometimes get a loud buzzing sound through the speakers and headset, usually when using FS2002 (or 2004). It has also happened once in the game Mafia. It has never happened in any other situations - I can play music, movies, and other games without any sound problems. And I never had any sound problems before when I used a GeForce 2.It seems to be connected to graphically "intense" situations, but it's hard to confirm, because I have been able to fly for a whole day without any problems, and another day I get the buzzing after five minutes...The buzz (or BUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR) is so loud and sudden that I always jump by surprise (and fear that the headset and speakers will become damaged) when I hear it. Often it is preceeded however, by the loss of some sounds. Usually I notice that the engines have gone awfully quiet, and then I get the buzzing. If I turn the sound off and on (pressing Q), pause the sim and then un-pause it, or change sound settings, I can get normal sounds for a few minutes if I'm lucky, but often all sounds will disappear, or the system might crash (with a colorful flickering pattern on the screen).Disconnecting the joystick, which is connected through the sound card's game port, has no effect.I have moved the sound card as far away from the Radeon as I could, so there are now two PCI slots between the cards (there is an ethernet card in the one closest to the sound card), but it didn't help. I have also removed one of the side panels on the computer, thinking it might be a temperature problem, but that didn't help either. My system is a HP Pavilion 7960 (Swedish)P4 1.7 GHz60 GB HDD512 MB RDRAM (originally 256 MB)Sapphire Radeon 9700 (with Catalyst 3.6 drivers) (originally a GeForce 2)Creative Soundblaster PCI 128, model CT5801 (getting exact info hasn't been easy - the card came with my HP system)Sidewinder Force Feedback ProWindows MEI sent an email to Sapphire yesterday, but I thought it was a good idea to try here too. I don't know whether I should try contacting ATI and Creative, or maybe even HP also.Thanks,Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
July 27, 200322 yr Martin --Sorry that I can't offer more help, but here goes:1) Did you completely uninstall all of the det drivers on your system?2) Have you updated your sound card drivers to the latest? If you have, have you tried different older drivers for your sound card? Have you tried different Cat drivers for your vid card?3) What is your sound quality setting in FS? High?Sorry I can't be of more help :(
July 27, 200322 yr >1) Did you completely uninstall all of the det drivers on>your system? As far as I know, yes. The Radeon seems to work well, mostly. The information is far from clear, and it looks like the driver installation can be quite complicated, so I don't want to do it unless there is a good chance I won't mess anything up.When I installed the Radeon the 3.1 drivers were current I think. I've used all the later drivers.>3) What is your sound quality setting in FS? High?Yes, high. I'd rather get a new sound card than use a lower setting.>Sorry I can't be of more help :(But thanks for trying! :-)Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
July 27, 200322 yr >As far as I know, yes. The Radeon seems to work well, mostly.>What should I do to be certain?Well, two things: Go into your control panel - add/remove programs and see if nVidia is listed there. If yes, uninstall. Next, go to www.guru3d.com and download det destroyer, and run it. That should remove all remaining parts of the det drivers. Believe me when I say that the det uninstall program does not do a good job of cleaning out the drivers...Not sure if this will help your problem, but it sure as shootin can't hurt anything.>I have never changed sound drivers on this machine. The information is far from clear, and it looks like>the driver installation can be quite complicated, so I don't>want to do it unless there is a good chance I won't mess>anything up.Unfortunetly I can't help you with that problem, as I don't own that particular card. However, updating your sound drivers may help, esp if they are the half (insert naughty word here) drivers that windows installs, ie the 'basic stripped down version'.>Yes, high. I'd rather get a new sound card than use a lower>setting.Definately :)
July 28, 200322 yr I ran Detonator Destroyer, and sure enough it found something. Now if I don't hear the BUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR within, say, a week, I think I can assume the problem is gone. :-)Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
July 28, 200322 yr Martin -Excellent! I hope that worked for you. As for your soundcard, I think I found some drivers that'll work for you, but I am not sure. http://www.americas.creative.com/support/f...&os=4&subcat=17And download the file entitled, 'Sound Blaster PCI128 (Drivers Only - Windows 2000, ME and XP)' It says these drivers are for 'PCI128 Sound Blaster Cards', so I would assume that your card fits in this catergory. I hope that helps you in some way :)EDIT: I found these in the 'americas' section of the site, not sure if you can use these drivers in the swedish version of windows....
July 28, 200322 yr Thanks for looking around. I looked at the European section of the site as well as the American, and looking at the different downloads just makes me confused: Do the drivers work for all SB PCI 128 cards? (Some refer to a specific model.) Do I need wave sets? Also, most drivers are so old, I can't see why they would possibly do any good. But you never know of course. :-)I think I'll wait a few days and see if I get a reply from Sapphire.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
July 28, 200322 yr I heard it again. :-(This time while making an approach with the DC-3 in a thunderstorm in Colorado. I had flown for around an hour before it happened. When I run Detonator Destroyer I get this message.http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/26277.jpgI have uninstalled the drivers, and there are no references to them whatsoever in the Add/Remove Programs list. When I click Yes on the next prompt, the program says the drivers are uninstalled and asks me to reboot. But if I run the program again after rebooting it will tell me the same thing: that the drivers are still there. :-hmmmMartin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
July 28, 200322 yr Martin -Dang it. Sounds like the uninstall progam for the det drivers(the one in the add remove programs applet) did not remove itself completely from the registry, and now det destroyer still thinks that they dets are still installed. Why Det Destoryer isn't fixing that little problem is beyond me.....I wouldn't worry about it too much, I don't think that old det drivers laying around are causing any problems. The only thing I can think of is new drivers for your sound card. If that doesn't help, then I have no idea :(
July 28, 200322 yr OK, I'm not gonna worry about the probably non-existent old drivers then. :-)I've now contacted Sapphire, ATI, and Creative. So hopefully I'll have an answer from them within a few days. If they can't help, I can think of getting a new sound card and/or upgrading to Win XP, since everyone is talking about how bad ME is! (I don't have much problems with it though, so I'm thinking that something might wrong with it. ;-))Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
August 4, 200322 yr I am getting a crackling buzzing sound that comes on with two add on planes I have installed. Dont get it with the default FSCOF planes. However using the new FFX DC10-10 with Stefan Ahlbergs panel, as well as the FFX 732 and 733 (using the Ariane TCASII panel)I get the same buzzing popping problem. Its very loud and will go and come. No views or other sounds seem to affect it on or off.I use Directx 9b and a gainward Ti4800 SE 128MB video card running latest 45.67 drivers. Visually all seems well (tweaked up like heck though.) Not sure that has anything to do with anything though. I have checked my sound codecs. All the appropriate MS ones are installed and being used in device manager. Is this an MSFS bug?I dont have this problem with FS2002 (still installed) nor do I have it with any other game. Mebbe these panels need updates...Eric AND
August 4, 200322 yr Martin,So far so good. Either XP or FS9 and DX9 did it, but haven't had any occurences. And there have been some pretty intense graphics with those clouds. Haven't installed any large add-on aircraft yet, but we shall see. I did have a pretty serious problem with the latest Omega drivers, but that's a different issue.Cheers,Todd
August 6, 200322 yr Bump on this... Im hoping somebody has a clue on this..as its a major drag. Eric AND
August 6, 200322 yr >So far so good. Either XP or FS9 and DX9 did itDid you upgrade to Windows XP? That's what I did this weekend, and I haven't had the buzz since. :-) I also got a nice performance boost, both in FS and Windows in general! (Now I only need to figure out how to get my CD burner to work. :-()Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
