very weird disk problem - experts needed !

Featured Replies

I am running Windows Me with two partitions C & D.Like often in the past I decided to resize my partitions and move about 2 GB free space out of D to C. I use Partition Magic for that. But PM while it was almost done with the task returned some sort of error. When I rebooted I noticed that I lost 2 GB of disk space ! I saw that size of D was decremented by 2 GB but C did not gain any extra space.I ran Windows' disk scan utility - all seems fine, no errors are showing up.I ran PM's error check utility and it immediately returned some sort of error # on partition C telling me that I have some open files on C and should run operating system's check utility. Which utility it is ???How can I fix my problem short of reformatting the whole C ? When I look at the total size of C & D they no longer add up to 13.5 GB - instead I get around 11 GB, over 2 GB of disk space is gone !!Michael J.

Not sure about ME. Typically, open "My Computer." Right click on the drive - C: in your case. In the dialog box, select "Tools." Then select "Check Now" from the "Error Checking" box at the top.Step 2. Go get Win2kPro and get away from WinME as fast as you can.

Typically when this happens, it could be due to some kind of software corruption on your OS....that is what could be giving you the mixed messages where one says no errors and the other says a disk error.Defrag, clean your prefetch and then run Scandisk full bore (will take some time). If you continue to get the errors after doing all of this, I would consider you run an Anti-virus to check for trojans and the like, and if that comes up clean...you just might want to consider FDisking your entire Hard Drive. When it doubt, FDisk. And BTW, I second getting away from ME as soon as you can. Garbage OS in my opinion.Mike P4 2.4C @3.44 285FSBAsus P4C800 Deluxe1gb Corsair XMS PC3500 Asus V9950 FX5900 Ultra 256mb 500/950SB Audigy2 Platinum ExWatercooled baby!!!Pics: http://community.webshots.com/user/chksix2002Areyounervousyet.jpg
