January 11, 200422 yr A quick one. I've got 512MB 3200 Crucial memory. I'm running an AMD 2600XP at 333 MHz. I know I'm overkill with the 3200, not using to it's full potential, but I want to upgrade to 1GB, to run other programs in addition to MSFS (ie. FSHotseat).Could I run 512MB 2700 on the same Gigabyte mobo? Or would I run into problems and should just stick with another 512MB 3200? Looking off of pricewatch.com, the difference between the two is only about $3.Thanks,
January 11, 200422 yr I would stick with the same speed. As memory is made in batches, it is tested for quality at the proposed speeds and other requirements. If it fails, it is tested at the next lower speeds and so on until, it is thrown out/recycled.You might be overkill but you know that the memory was tested and operated at those parameters. For $3.00, I get the higher speed!W. January 11, 200422 yr Hi Joe,I second W Sieffert's suggestion. Also, the faster RAM may come in useful, as the AMD XP processors generally tend to overclock quite well, so you could try running your CPU at 350MHz FSB, for example, without having to worry about overclocking your RAM as well. Having said that, you would probably need some new CPU cooling, if you want to run your processor at speeds that are considerably higher than default. Cheers,Gosta.http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2betateam.jpg
January 12, 200422 yr I like the way you guys think. I think I'm going to just stick with the 3200 memory.Haven't been able to really overclock this CPU, haven't figured out why. I've got an upgraded cooling fan on the CPU, can't remember which one, and a big desk fan blowing air into the computer itself. Using the gigabyte EZ-tuner, it says my temps are usually pretty low. Thanks,
