Graphics card upgrading

Featured Replies

Hi,I've just ordered an XFX GEforce FX5900 card (still waiting for it to arrive), but i'd like to know how to install. I've currently got an ATI Radeon 9200, so I envisage some problems due to different drivers. Will this be a problem, or would it be a case of installing drivers, then "plugging" in the card and restarting my PC?Thanks for any advise

First remove your ATI drivers - there should be a remove utility program in the c:ATI folder that will wipe away all ATI software. Then turn off the computer, romove the old card, put in the new card, start your computer and install nvidia drivers, either from your cd or preferably the most recent ones from the web. - Oyvind

Thanks for your reply. So once the ATI drivers are removed and the new card is started, the PC will start up ready to install the new drivers. I take it displays without drivers installed.

Assuming you have Windows XP, yes. Depending on how you install the computer will boot up with the `found new hardware` blurb and it will then install the default XP drivers for that card or prompt you to choose the location for the new drivers. The defaults will be several generations older than the latest drivers so you also need to have the new drivers ready to upgrade anyway. DON'T use the drivers that come with the card, download the latest couple of sets (53.03, 56.64 and 60.72) and then you can have fun trying them all. Simply point the installer to the location of the new drivers and installation should proceed automatically from there. From your banner I assume you are a FS9'er? Have a look at the other thread in the other hardware forum here on the best technique to install the new card with FS. Although it SHOULD be automatic, it is recommended you manually remove the references to the ATI card from the FS9.cfg before booting Flight Sim.Allcott
