ATI Radeon 9800 PRO Tips?

Featured Replies

Hi All, Just got my new toy home and in the process of getting it setup for FS9. I've spent a couple of days tweaking and I'm still not satisfied with the display yet. Thought perhaps there might be someone out there who has the same card that might be willing to share his/her settings to help me get in the ballpark.Thanks,P4 3.0EASUS P4P800-SE1G PC32002x 80G SATA/Raid0ATI 9800 Pro 256MTTX 19" Flat MonitorSaitek X-45 Hotas

First thing I'd do is check to see if you have an R360 core (9800 XT). Chances are you do if you bought the card recently. If that's the case you can easily flash the BIOS to make the card run at XT speeds without any problems. The only proper way to check what core you have is to remove the cooler and physically look at the top of the core. With regard to setting up the card, I use the Omega drivers, which makes it all pretty simple. With your system you should be able to run 4XAA and 16XAF, all settings to quality. Turn off VSync and Trueform. Also, disable VPU Recover (it will crash your system while it looks for system crashes... kinda cool, huh?).Should you wish to overclock the card (and the 9800's overclock pretty well) I strongly recommend that you install aftermarket cooling. This is the hot ticket http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/vid-21.html . Not the best option for overclocking but it's easy to install and works well to move the hot air around the video card (and that dead corner of your case) out the back of the case.FYI, I have an ATI 9800 Pro w/128MB and R360 core. I flashed the BIOS and am able to run the card 24/7 at 425/398. After flashing, XP sees the card as an XT but of course it doesn't have the temp monitoring or overclocking tool (which is basically useless... it will OC the card only one step in core and memory, which amounts to nothing more than 6.75Mhz).Hope this helps,Greg

hey Greg, I have a 9800 pro 128mb with the R360 core. Have you seen a noticiable increase in performance after overclocking and flashing the bios? If so how exactly does it run better? faster loading textures? Thanks, Andre

Hi Andre,After a BIOS flash, your card would be seen as a 9800 XT and run at 412/365. Default 9800 Pro speeds are 380/340.I run my card with a little overclock (425/398),so I see a slight preformance increase. Mostly in reduced texture loading time, and a little in FPS (I run the sim locked at 24 FPS, and I see fewer dips in poly intense sceneries).Greg
