September 11, 200421 yr A bit off topic. My wife's computer and mine are both connected through a LAN hub, one connection of which is a DSL. This has the private IP of 10.0.0.1; this IP is used in both computers as the "Default Gateway" address in the LAN connection / TCP-IP properties (both run WinXP home). It's a very basic system that I built myself. Both computers see each other (ping command), both can access our LAN printer and files can be shared OK. And my computer works fine, it's my wife's that's the issue.Attempting to access the internet with a URL results in a time-out from the "finding site" status- ie. does not seem to be able to resolve URLs to IP addresses. We both have the same DNS settings; in fact everything appears to be identical other than the manually set private IP addresses for the 2 computers (addresses are manually set). I get exactly the same symptoms if I misname my gateway setting to a false IP, so her's is behaving as though it cannot see the gateway IP (which is the router); or URL's are not attemting to find the gateway. I can ping the gateway IP OK from her computer.I know just enough to set up a LAN like this, so am puzzled as to what could cause this. Her computer can access e-mail OK, and the servers' URLs (pop.dnvr.uswest.net) are being resolved (Although I don't know if the name resolution is done the same way for MS Outlook is is done in MS Explorer). Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried the obvious, checking hardware cables, rebooting, restoring to a time when she can recall the internet working OK, and disabling Norton firewall. This is really baffling me. I guess I'd be interested to know what tells XP / IE to go to the gateway of the URL is not on the LAN, and is this a setting that could be affecting this issue? Thanks for any info,Bruce. September 11, 200421 yr Hi Bruce,I am a little confused about your connections. The LAN should be connected:Cable/DSL Modem --> Router (maybe Router with switch) --> Switch or Hub --> Multiple ComputersThe Router should supply the IP Address to each peripheral automatically unless you have set it to be fixed somehow. It could be that your Cable/DSL Modem and Router are miss communicating. It happens here in Lightening prone Florida all the time.Shut down all your computers, turn off the power to your Router, Hub, Switches. If the Cable/DSL Modem has a small power plug at its rear, unplug it, otherwise unplug the powerpack. Once everything is OFF, wait about 60s. Start your Router, Hub, Switch and let them stabilize. The router usually has a test light that blinks for about 30s. Once it indicates it has passed the test and the normal lights are lit, plug in the Cable/DSL modem. You should see the activity light for the Router IP connection start blinking and the modem should find a signal and eventually light its appropiate lights indicating it has a good signal. Start one of the computers and see if the problem is corrected. The router should provide an IP address. Press Start, right-click My Network Places, select properties, double-click on Local Area Connection, Support tab and you will see some information similiar to the following:Address type: Assigned by DHCPIP Address: 192.168.2.61SubNet Mask: 255.255.255.0Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1You can press the Detail button for more information. If the above doesn't work, shutdown everything again. Disconnect your Cable/DSL modem from the Router and connect one of your computers directly to the Cable/DSL modem. Plug in the Cable/DSL modem, let it stablize indicating it has the proper signals. Start the computer you connected to the Cable/DSL modem, let it stabilize. Go to the Local Area Connection as above and see what the information now states. Start your browser and see if the problem is corrected. If so, reconnect everything again and see if the problem is cleared. If not, you may have to start the router and fool the Cable/DSL modem with the IP Address that the one computer alone set. I haven't had to do that in some time.Lastly, I have been having problems with the home page for my ISP. If you home page is not loading, my ISP recommended the following:Right click the Internet Explorer Icon, select properties, select the Advanced tab, press the Restore Defaults button. Select the Privacy tab, set it to LOW. Select the Connections tab, press LAN settings button, and ensure nothing is selected. Select the General tab, delete Files, offline content, OK. Delect Cookies, OK. Select Settings, View Objects, delete any broken or unknown objects if you didn't place them. Exit all the above and see if the problem is corrected.W. Sieffert Bill Sieffert
September 13, 200421 yr Author Hi, thanks for your reply. I was out flying on my instrument rating long cross-country yesterday, now just to brush up for the check-ride!I may have explained my network the wrong way- the way you drew it is the way mine is, only the modem and router are one device (Cisco 675).My computer works fine. My wife's can access internal addresses, and can also access her e-mail (pop) servers. I can ping the DNS servers from her machine, I can use nsname to resolve names to URLs. However, clicking on a named link or entering a name into the web browser just results in "finding site .....".I tried powering down and up like you suggested with no outcome. Although her static IP settings were exactly the same as mine (other than her IP address, of course), I activated DHCP (the router assigns info automatically if that option is selected), re-booted her machine and now all is OK. I still can't figure it out, I might try reverting her back to manual settings sometime and see what happens. Thanks again for your helpful reply. Are you coming to Denver?Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. September 13, 200421 yr Hi Bruce,No, I will not be able to attend the conference. Too much money to clean up from hurricanes. I haven't flown in a month, since the Citabria I was using was damaged plus the back to back hurricanes.I am getting itchy to just fly. I might rent a C172, just to do some pattern work.Glad your instrument training is coming along.Regards,W. Sieffert Bill Sieffert
