January 4, 200521 yr Hi.I have a bit of a niggling problem that I was hoping someone here might be able to help me with.this is what happened.I went to the ATI site and downloaded the latest CAT 4.12 driver with the complete control panel as specified by ATI for my XT800PE.but it told me that I would need the Microsoft.NET Version 1.1 Framework installed to use this driver and it's utilities, well I got them both, installed the .Net driver, and then the CAT4.12, well I didn't see any improvements whatsoever, and didn't like the control panel much etc, so I un-installed the .Net Framework driver, and the ATI driver and ran the ATI utilities to get rid of anything left behind, as usual, then I downloaded the CAT4.12 without the fancy control panel, all this is fine, but what IS now happening is that every time I boot up my PC it has this fancy XP Logo with the user name in the top window, and a space for the pass word below, which I never set up, and it doesn't need, all I have to do is just press the OK button and it's up and running as normal, I called Microsoft today to ask them why this is happening, but they said I had to arrange a pre-payment first of
January 4, 200521 yr Hi Steve,That CCC is a bugger! I don't like the way it (and all the other stuff required to run it) roots itself into your system.Try this to kill off whatever is causing the pop-up window at start-up. Once you figure out who the culprit is you can then easily delete the offender from your system.http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtmlCheers,Greg
January 4, 200521 yr Hi Steve, the .net framework creates a separate user account. Go to Start Menu/Settings/Control Panel/User Accounts and delete the .net account. This will get rid of the log-in screen.Cheers,Gosta.http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2betateam.jpg
January 4, 200521 yr "the .net framework creates a separate user account."A seperate user account?!?! Jeez, George Orwell would have loved it!!Thanks for the heads up. Yet another reason to stay away from CCC.Regards,Greg
January 5, 200521 yr Another alternative is to install TweakUI (available through Microsoft for free) and set up an "Auto-Login" - this will bypass the "Welcome" login screen and bring you straight in on the account you specify. This may be the better solution for someone who is leaving .Net on their system, as it doesn't remove a potentially required system user from the computer. (Some programs require a "user" account to work, and usually it is well hidden from view. MS screwed up and made this one visible to the users) TweakUI is also useful if you get sick of CD's that autorun...SoarPics - what is this CCC you speak of?
January 6, 200521 yr "...what is this CCC you speak of?"It is the Catalyst Control Center video card/driver tweaker that ATI introduced a few months ago. CCC has a number of cool features (end user made and implemented skins, for example) but requires the MS .NET Framework to function. .NET is a handy and easy to use programming interface, but many folks question the need for .NET just for a simple video card tweaker (your truly included). While some may find CCC fun to play with, I'll just stay with a simple video tweaker and have fun with my games. As with any new application CCC had it's stumbles when introduced. ATI has a dedicated team on board to deal with CCC, and they have worked hard to get it sorted. A visit to Driverheaven and Rage3D will show that the CCC threads there are still active.Cheers,Greg
