October 20, 200520 yr I'm running a P4 2.66 with 1 GB Ram and a BFG GeForce FX 5900 128 MB video card. I'm looking for a performance increase in FS9 to take me through at least another year on the same machine. I'm considering a BFG GeForce 6800GT Overclocked AGP card. Does anyone have experience with that card on a similar rig? If I do, should I expect a significant performance increase or would you advise waiting a year or so to upgrade my entire system? Thanks
October 21, 200520 yr Hi Kevin,Couple of things:First, I'm not sure upgrading your video card is a great idea given your set up, especially if you're just using the machine for FS. The P4 2.66GHz is getting a bit antiquated (2-3 years?) and I think the CPU/RAM/mobo is more of a bottleneck for your machine. Getting a new video card would probably give you some gains (probably more in image quality than with fps) but your money may be better spent on the CPU/RAM/mobo. However, there isn't a whole lot you can get in terms of CPU/RAM/mobo with the price of a 6800GT (especially since you would probably also need a new PCI Express video card to go with the mobo).Second, I've never been a big fan of the 6x00 series from NVIDIA. The latest 7800GTX and 7800GT are both very fast cards but the 6x00 family was mostly beaten by the same-generation counterparts from ATI i.e. X850XT, X800XL etc. So even if you do decide you want to take the plunge into a new video card, I would not suggest the 6800GT. The ATI X850XT AGP may be a better buy (it should be within the price range of the 6800GT now that ATI is about to release the X1800XT.)In sum, I'd save up and get a new machine.Hope this helps.Edwin
October 21, 200520 yr Author That makes a lot of sense. If it weren't for the changeover to PCI Express I might be inclined to get an card now with the intention of transferrring it to a new machine later. It's probably best to wait for a while... Thanks.
