Laptop Recomendations

Featured Replies

My neighbor wants to get a laptop for himself. He has a summer house and wants something to use during the summer when he is not at his desktop. He plays games. mostly Quake and FPS type games, but also likes to play FS9 once in a while. He asked me what to get, but I don't know anything about laptops and dont want to stear him wrong. Can anyone recomend a good laptop for games. His budget is up to $2000 (give or take $200). What things should he make sure it has or dosent have etc..Any advice is appreciated.Rob

The differences between laptops and desktops are narrowing. He should look for similar attributes to what you'd look for in a desktop. If he's planning on running is mostly in places where he can plug it in, I would suggest the desktop replacement type with a 6800 or 7800 video card. Dell makes the XPS with a 17" screen (1900 x 1200). You can get either video card in them. There is also a 9300 model that's a bit less expensive. Techbargains.com often runs discounts on these models of up to 40% off the list price, which brings the XPS well within his budget.I have an XPS with the 256 mb 6800 Ultra card, Pentium M 2.0, and 1 gb RAM. I haven't run FS9 on it, but I have run NASCAR Racing 2003 at 1900 x 1200 and it ran at very playable framerates. There was a 35% discount at the time I bought mine. I paid $2400 for it with the TV recording setup, bluetooth and some other extras added in. Pass on some of those extras and it would be right around $2000 with the 35-40% discount.
