Radeon 9800 Pro vs Radeon 9600XT

Featured Replies

I had a Radeon 9800 pro graphic card installed in my computer but it was started to go and I had to replace it. I had to replace it with a Radeon 9600xt graphic card, and while I do not see a difference between the two I still would like to know what are the differences I can look for in my graphics.(I had to wait 2 weeks before I could get another 9800 Pro. Thats why I got the 9600xt)

Hi Joseph,I'm a bit curious as to why you got such a dated graphics card. While I understand that there are fewer AGP graphics cards out there now that PCIe is out, the 9600XT is quite a dated card. Oh well, too late now...I'm also a bit confused by your question because there shouldn't be any visual differences when changing graphics cards. The only visual difference would come from the fact that the 9600XT is slower (I think, but I can't remember) and so you may have to lower the resolution or settings such as AA and AF in order to keep frame rates up. But different graphics cards at identical resolutions and settings should yield the same picture. (Well, that's not 100% true. In newer generation 3D games, shaders and fog settings etc. can vary a bit between generations of cards and/or with manufacturer but for most people and with FS9, you can assume no visual difference would be apparent.)Hope this helps.Edwin

I got the 9600XT because If I wanted something better I would of had to wait 2 or 3 weeks, and I could not go that long without the computer. I need the computer for work stuff. As for my question I was just curious because I could not see any visual differences between what I had and this card.

The biggest difference between the 9800 Pro and 9600 XT is that the former has 8 Pixel Pipelines while the latter only has 4. This may not be an issue based upon a number of factors, such as CPU/memory/motherboard combo (this is especially so with FS because it wants to see a balanced system), screen resolution, drivers, etc.Generally speaking the most important performance advantage of the 9800 Pro is that it would let you run a higher screen resolution (all other factors being the same) than the 9600 XT. It also might offer some visual advantages in the sim that the 9600 XT could not.Greg
