ASUS A8N CTD woes please help

Featured Replies

Hi guys I am suspecting bad RAM on this but am open to suggestions.I have an A8n-SLI premium MB 7800Gt card, 1GB of Corsair 2 2 2 5 XMS Dual Ch ddr RAM 400MHZ with an athlon 64 4000+ CPU. initially FS would not install at all claiming a different fault at each attempt.I replaced my SATA cables and moved the RAM to the other slots. FS installed but now it will CTD after 10 mins or so.I have seen the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH 3 or 4 times during virus scan operations or general net surfing or other install processes. the administrative tools event viewer claims unknown fault MOH pacific Assault CTDs too but as of now Call of Duty 2 runs ok?Any ideas?Stan

Hi Stan, perhaps the RAM settings? Maybe give 2.5-3-3-6 a shot? FWIW, I test all machines with a program called memtest and let it run through at least 50-80 passes (depending on the amount of RAM this can take a long time + serves as burn-in). Memtest can be downloaded @ memetest.org. Hope this helps, good luck and kind regards Jaap

1) Just out of curosity...What Hard Drives are you using??2) What power supply?? Needs to be a Good Quality 500w or better...This mb is picky about power supplies!! (I have one too...Typing on it now...4000+ A8N-SLI Premium)...(Sweet Set-Up!!)3) Did you build it yourself??4) What are your temps like when running FS?? Or any thing that will run??5) Confirm that you have two power cables(molex connectors) feeding your 7800GT(Each of them if you have two)...6) Confirm that you have a power cable plugged into your EZ Plug...Even if your running only one videocard!! 7) Run memtest if you like...Bad RAM would be a little down the list in my opinion...Could be...Memtest is Great!! and will let you know if your ram is bad...I second using it...I'd leave the RAM timings set to "Auto" for now...Let the 4000+'s memory controller run things until you get to the bottom of this...Once your stable and no more CTD's...You can adjust the timings as you wish for performance...Just my opinion..May be Helpful: (Note..This thread is on the Deluxe..Most of the Troubleshooting info will cross over...Obviously not drivers ect!! he he)..http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/38623Premium Thread:http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/46615/Also:http://mental18.phpbbweb.com/index.php?mforum=mental18Hope This Helps..

I have the standard A8N (only running 1 video card at this time). I have an AMD 3700+ and 1GB Crucial memory. You most likely know this, but the manual does specify which memory slots to use for 2 sticks (I have 2* 500MB).Also- something else that you no doubt did do, but I'll ask it anyway since it solved someone else's issues here recently. I assume you re-installed the OS (XP?) after the mobo install? I can never fogure out why one wouldn't do so, but it does happen.Bruce.

Thanks to all who helped, especially you Chuck. My 7800 GT (PNY) only has 1 power connection and it is hooked up, EZ plug is hooked up I run an ultra x-finity 600W PS 2 WD SATA HDsI built it myself with 2 120MM fans intake and exhaust, 1 80 MM side panel intake blowing onto the MB and into my masscool monster heat sink and 80 MM fan.both HDs sport 2 fan hard disk coolers. It sounds lioke a DC-10 cockpit but it runs way cool 46C is the highest temp I've seen under load GPU or CPU. I fixed the problem....it did turn out to be bad RAM. it now runs like a raped ape! 20 FPS at simflyers ORD with loads of AI and lago's MD-80! it wont drop under 31FPS (my lock) anywhare else, and Call of duty 2 is downright scary!thanks againStan

Awesome!!! Bad Ram huh...I would have lost that dollar..he heLook's like a really nice build!!
