I got a quick question about RAM...

Featured Replies

Hey everybody I have a quick question about RAM.right now my computer has 1GB of RAM in it. It's a dual channel kit 2x512MB sticks DDR400.I'm trying to sell some old computer parts of mine (CPU and vid card from my recent upgrade) and somebody has offered to trade me for a new in-package 1GB stick of DDR400 RAM for my old CPU. This might be a good trade to me if I can pick up a 2nd stick of 1GB DDR400 RAM allowing me to upgrade to 2GB of RAM.My question is though, do I need to make sure to buy the exact same stick of RAM to match it for dual channel, or will any other stick of RAM do (so long as it has the same timings)? The RAM is kind of a no-name brand? (see below) RAM which I am also a little weary of. Should I just pass on the deal and get a real set of dual channel 2GB RAM, or pick up this stick and get a matching 2nd one?Money wise it's a pretty good deal as the stick of RAM is about $100 whereas I am only asking about $50 for the CPU. A typical dual channel 2GB kit is about $200 as well. But if the RAM isn't really suitable for a dual-channel 2GB setup then I don't really care about the trade and would rather have the money instead. What do you think?RuahrcPS This is the link he sent me for more details about the product:http://www.compusa.com/products/product_in...ype=rv#moreinfo

They haven't got to be matched exactly, except in capacity. If one stick has slower timings than the other then the motherboard will set the overall timings to that of the slower stick.
