November 4, 200619 yr I have been having a very frustrating problem with my new computer. The computer is an AMD Athlon64 Dual Core 4200+ 2GB of RAM, GeForce 7900GTX. It is brand new, only received it last week. From day one, it has been randomly shuting down. Even on the first day I had it, before any programs had been installed, it was shutting down. There is no pattern to it, it is completely random. It even happens when I'm not touching it. I have turned it on, not touched anything and it will shut down. At other times, it will run for hours no problems. After about 5 attempts, I finally was able to complete an installation of FS9, and I can usually get that running for about 1 minute and the computer will shut down. Very annoying especially considering I am able to run it fine on my 3 year old computer. Any ideas, or have I bought a lemon? I suppose someone has to get the computer that was made on a Friday afternoon!CheersMark
November 4, 200619 yr I would turn off the power, open the case, and make sure all of the components are tightly within their slots (switch around the memory chips as well).Make sure the fans are working to keep the CPU and inside cool. Jot down the CPU temp. Make sure that is not getting too hot. Then, if that did not work, I'd check out to make sure the power supply was hooked up and working correctly (not defective). RH
November 5, 200619 yr If you bought the computer from a vendor, i.e., Dell, HP, CheapGuys, etc., then I would try to get support from the vendor. If after reasonable support attempts, then I would agree with Staggerwing. If you bought the parts and pieces and assembled the computer, then I would start with the basics mentioned above. I would also remove one stick of memory to see if it eliminated the problem. You also need to ensure you are running the different controller chip software for your different buses.I would be leary of opening the computer if you bought it from a vendor, since it may void any warranties. Check before opening.W. Sieffert Bill Sieffert
