December 4, 200223 yr Hi guys,Just a quick question. Since a vast majority of METARs (in the US anyway) these days are automatically generated with ASOS-type equipment, I've become curious about how weather programs handle the default 10SM visibility that is given when it's clear out.I like flying visual approaches, as well as issuing them for online ATC (www.vatsim.net). So, the earlier I or my pilots can see the airport, the better. Is it possible somehow to have the visibility in FS be set to, say, 20 miles instead of 10 miles when the METAR reports 10SM? If only because when 10 miles is reported by an automated station, it's usually clear as a bell out there. I would think it be not too difficult to have the program parse through the METAR to see if is contains both 10SM and A01, A02 or another automated station identifier.I appreciate any ideas you have on this. Thanks much.~Nate
December 4, 200223 yr Commercial Member Hi Nate,This is handled by FSUIPC's random extend visibility option. ActiveSky is designed to use this. When a 10 mile visibility report is processed, it sends to FSUIPC, which in turn randomly extends the vis according to your other FSUIPC visibility settings (usually between 10 and 20 miles).Hope that helps!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxresmallbanner.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
December 8, 200223 yr Hi Damian,I am finding that some METARS quoting visibility as 15KM or 25KM for example, are not being handled correctly and show the visibility as 1 mile (1.6km).This is what I found at NZCH and NZWN last night.Any advise to assist on that issue? Many thanks.
