December 14, 200223 yr HiMy first flight with wxRE and some concern about the cloud cover. As you can see from the screenshot bkn033 is reported, but it looks more like few033 from the picture. The status-page is also attached. Am I missing some setting here? I have followed all the recomendations about the FSUIPC-settings. I have had this concern with FS2002 before and hoped that wxRE would improve on this issue, but maybee it is not possible to fix this./olle
December 15, 200223 yr Commercial Member Hello,There is definately room for improvement in your configuration. At first glance it appears you are using the wrong kind of cloud set for best use with ActiveSky wxRE. I suggest trying the default white set (available here in file library) and then experiment to find what you like best from there. Try moving your cloud density slider up as well which will help. Please let us all know your results for future reference, and I will be more than happy to help if you continue to have trouble here. Thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
December 15, 200223 yr Hello DamianThank you for the answer. I forgot to mention that I am using the FSSkyWorldSE cloud set on that picture. I will try the default white set and see what happens. Another question: On the status-picture I attached the number for Clouds Lower Density is 5. Is that 5 octas? If so, do you always assume 5 octas for a broken cloudcover? In my experience when a broken cloudcover is reported, most of the time it is 7 octas.best regardsolle
December 15, 200223 yr Commercial Member Olle the logic for determining the actual octa is very complex.. I will not go into much detail.. but it depends on your starting altitude from the cloud layer when it initially forms depending on it's processed octa.. but this can and will change depending on FS's draw mode (2D or 3D) for best effect.. MANY other factors as well.. 5/8 should be giving you significant coverage even in 3D mode like that... It does for me with default set here... Some FSSWSE sets just don't work well with the full range of realistic cloud conditions (FEW, SCT, BKN, OVC) as they are more specific to a certain 'type' only. There are some great sets though that DO work well in all conditions.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
December 15, 200223 yr The default white set is better but I still dont think I am experiencing a broken coverage. I you take a look in spot view the clouds are only present near your plane, at some distance it is clear. I guess these are the 3D-clouds you are mentioning. On approach to an airport that is reporting a broken cloudcover in reality you would not expect to see the runway until you are below the cloudbase. In FS2002 with this kind of broken cloud representation you can see the runway through most of the approach, above and in the cloud, not very realistic, I think. Would it be possible to have a setting in a future release of wxRE that would put the cloudcover to overcast when broken is reported? Let the user decide the cloud-representation a little bit better. Which of the FSSWSE sets is the best for all conditions?/olle
December 15, 200223 yr Hello, Activesky is Excellent in all area, BUT, the recommendation for using "white clouds" and "default clouds" are not very realistic, Real Pilot myself, you will get 10x better result with fs sky world se. I am using real puffy 1 set 1 and various others set.Ps: Keeping improving your force and hard works in programming.Eric
December 15, 200223 yr Commercial Member Hi, the issue with broken layers and their perceived 'coverage range' is a known issue with FS2002 that we have done everything we can (up to this point) to improve. You'll notice that only at certain altitudes (basically right in the layer) will it look like this, and when you get further away from this altitude the visuals will improve. I am working on special visibility effects right now which may be the ticket to solve this FS2002 limitation once and for all... Also I like the overcast force option you suggested.. I will work on this. Thank you for the feedback!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
December 16, 200223 yr Hi DamianI am glad that you like the idea of a overcast force option, hope to see it in a future release. Forgot to mention before that everything else is working very well. Will go on now and explore the different ways this program can simulate aviation weather.olle
