ActiveSky not using correct airport code to retrieve Wx

Recommended Posts

Here is an interesting issue with ActiveSky - I created a flight in FS2002 to start at Oswego Cty airport in upstate New York (USA) since there was a snow storm moving through the area. This aiport's ICAO identifyer is KFZY. However, for many years up until a few years ago, it was N00.When FS2002 started by placing my aircraft at the runway of KFZY, I cleared the weather in FS2002, launched ActiveSky, then waited while ActiveSky found my location and downloaded and configured the weather (I have the "Online" option enabled).ActiveSky is finding that my location is near KN00 (note that this is similar to the older ICAO airport identifyer) and attempting to download weather for this airport. It is finding something from the METAR server, but certainly not the real current weather. When I attempted to force KFZY in using the Custom/Destination feature, ActiveSky will find and download the correct current weather for KFZY, but this mysterious KNOO airport with its incomplete METAR is still overriding the weather. My guess is that the US METAR server ActiveWx uses must still have this older ICAO identifier partially active? Only for comparison purposes, FSMEteo does find and use the correct KFZY METAR data when it downloads from its METAR source.Hopefully the screenshot of this issue will display correctly.Looking forward to your findings on this issue.

Hello thank you for the detailed info..The problem is as you described, the KN00 airport is invalid but in the database of "active metar reports". Please remove the KN00 entry from your icao.txt file and I will remove it for the first update.. thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

>The problem is as you described, the KN00 airport is invalid >but in the database of "active metar reports". Interesting! I don't recall reading about the icao.txt file in the help file (which I read except for the weather section, since I know a little about aviation weather). What is the importance of this file? Does an airport need to be in this file for ActiveSky to be able to retrieve the METAR/TAF (if available)?> Please remove the KN00 entry from your icao.txt file and > I will remove it for the first update.. thanks! Thank you for the quick response. I have removed the bogus airport, but in the process noticed that the actual icao identifyer for the airport in question, KFZY, is not in this file. Thus, I have added it using the lat/lon and elevation from one of my JeppCharts. This is the necessary move, right?Thank you again!- Peter

Hi Peter,Sorry for the lack of reference of database files.. I will be adding this in shortly for the update.Yes, you should add the airport, however, please make sure that it is a valid METAR station and reports OK from NOAA first.. Let me know how it goes! Also could I get the lat/lon/elevation entry for that airport? I'll include it in the update... Thanks Peter!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

>Sorry for the lack of reference of database files.. I will >be adding this in shortly for the update. No problem at all! Just demonstrating that, indeed, some of your users do in fact read almost the entire help document before asking a question. :-)>Yes, you should add the airport, however, please make sure >that it is a valid METAR station and reports OK from NOAA >first.. Let me know how it goes! It went very well. Removed the bogus one and added the correct one, then tested it. ActiveSky now d/ls the correct weather at KFZY.> Also could I get the lat/lon/elevation entry for that airport? Happy to help...KFZY,N,43,21,W,076,23,475Regards,Peter
