December 17, 200223 yr I was flying an IFR from KSEA to KPDX running ActiveSky in offline mode with a stored file.About fifteen minutes into the flight, I was getting constant messages from ATC that I was flying above or below my designated flight level. This was caused by alimeter changes. This was happenening about every 1-2 minutes.Am I doing something wrong? Is it supposed to be this way?
December 17, 200223 yr The weather is updated as you approach each new reporting station, of which there are many in that area! lol. You don't say what a/c you were piloting but if you were cruising below the transition level (19,000ft in US) then you are likley to get a barometer change when ever you get close to a new reporting staion. If you were above the transition level then your barometer should have been set to 29.92 and so this issue doesn't arrise. Also you should check your barometer smoothing option (FSUIPC, Technical tab) is enabled, or it may not be set slow enough. Check Docs for details.Hope this helps...
December 17, 200223 yr I'm not support staff for wxRE, but maybe I can help anyway. That area may have quite a few reporting stations, and there is often a fairly large pressure difference from areas right on the coast to those inland a bit. This is especially true if there is a major storm approaching the coast, and/or the isobars (lines of equal pressure) are very close together (symptom would be quite strong winds). If any of those conditions are present, you will experience a different pressure reading from almost every station you go over, so as you travel from one METAR reporting station to the next, you will have to adjust your altimeter. If stations are quite close together, depending on your exact route, you could bounce back and forth a bit between one station and another, thus your altimeter settings will fluctuate quite a bit, and quite rapidly. Check to see if you have your "Update on New Metar Station" option turned on. If so, then you will get a new report (and maybe altimeter setting) for each station. In any event, this is not a fault in wxRE. It's actually just doing its job. FS' ATC could be a bit better in that respect though :-)Hope that helps!Glenn
December 17, 200223 yr Commercial Member Hi All,Do make sure baro smoothing is enabled for slow transitions as per the wxRE docs. This is important. Also realize that FS ATC does not properly take pressure changes into account and when over .30 inches of pressure difference from 29.92 you will see these errors. Best temporary fix is to set your altimeter to local setting with the B key. I am working on this incorporate a max pressure variation for ATC fix.
